The explosion rocked a medical building in Aliso Viejo, California, on Tuesday.

The explosion ripped through the first floor of the two-story medical building, blowing out walls and windows - and sending the preschool kids scattering, along with their parents.

Authorities had not found an explosive device Tuesday night but were searching through debris that was left after the blast. No children were injured, officials said.

Police investigators and FBI agents are studying the causes of the explosion, and they assure that there is no lingering threat to the community.

The Orange County Fire Authority (OCFA) said the explosion occurred on the first floor. She and the three injured were likely in close proximity to the explosion, Sawyer said.

Officials originally believed the explosion was caused by a vehicle crashing into the building, but Orange County Sheriff's Department spokeswoman Carrie Braun said no auto was involved and the department was investigating how the explosion occurred.

The Orange County Sheriff's Department stated in response to news reports: "Despite media reports quoting unnamed sources, we have not confirmed that the explosion is intentional, nor have we conclusively identified the source of the explosion".

FBI spokesman Mike Gifford said the cause of the explosion is still unknown and the agency has sent resources to help with the investigation, which is being led by Orange County Sheriff's Department.

McWilliams said she saw two burned women staggering out of the building, covered in ash and soot. Still, they chose to evacuate a nearby day care and other surrounding businesses as a precaution. McWilliams says one woman had skin peeling on her arm.

He explained that authorities were being extra cautious because they "don't see explosions in commercial buildings" often. The other woman was bleeding from her head.

Of the three people who were injured, Ms. Braun said, two suffered "significant" injuries while the third complained of smoke inhalation.
