Perhaps best known for her role as Lois Lane in the original Superman film series opposite Christopher Reeve, Margot Kidder was also remembered for her social activism and bravely discussing her struggles with mental illness.

"Margot passed away peacefully in her sleep on Sunday, May 13th", a representative for Kidder told The Times on Monday. It is still unclear if this was related to her death, but could have played a factor.

Kidder appeared with many of Hollywood's leading men during her 50-year career, including Robert Redford and James Garner, it was her role as the plucky Daily Planet reporter with a penchant for finding trouble in Superman (1978), Superman II (1980), Superman III (1983) and Superman IV (1987) that shot her to fame. For almost a decade, Kidder brought Lane to the big screen in four "Superman" films opposite Christopher Reeve, who died in 2004.

Margot got to grips with her condition and returned to acting, landing roles in TV shows like "Smallville", "Brothers & Sisters", and "The L Word".

She was married three times, including a six-day union in 1979 with actor John Heard.

Margot was best known for starring in Superman opposite Christopher Reeve, who died back in 2004. It is unclear at the moment how she died, but how she lived was as an outspoken and larger than life figure who found a unique perch in 1970s and '80s pop culture.

The icon had been ill; when she called into Detroit's The Drew And Mike Show on May 9, she said she had been 'in bed with the flu'.

The star's career began in the 1960s, where she appeared in low-budget Canadian films and other television series.

"We got brought up feeling that we that we had a responsibility to have a voice - a loud voice - for justice, for fairness", Annie Kidder told CTV News Channel.

Kidder's personal life was often tabloid fodder, never more so than in April 1996 when she went missing for four days. Her most recent role was in 2017 with the indie The Neighborhood.

Getty Actress Margot Kidder signs autographs in 2005. "She thought a whole group of people were after her".

She also briefly Wednesday French director Philippe de Broca.

Her first husband was McGuane. In 2007, she revealed she had not suffered a manic episode in 11 years and credited orthomolecular medicine.

The star also dated former Canadian prime minister Pierre Trudeau, directors Brian De Palma, writer/director Tom Mankiewicz and Steven Spielberg, as well as stand-up comedian Richard Pryor.
