Mahathir Mohamad, Malaysia opposition leader and incoming prime minister, center, speaks as Wan Azizah, president of Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR), candidate for deputy prime minister in a Mahathir government and the wife of jailed former opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim, left, listens during a news conference in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on May 10, 2018.

To ecstatic cries of "Reformasi" (Reform) - Anwar's ralling cry - he vowed to hundreds of journalists, supporters and prison guards to support the new government's efforts to clean up the country.

Bernama news agency said that dozens of police officers were also seen at a luxury condominium in another district of the Malaysian capital where Najib has an apartment.

On Wednesday, Mahathir said Abdul Gani had told him this week that he had prepared criminal charges implicating Najib when he was removed. He thanked the all people in Malaysia, Malays, Chinese, Indians, the entire spectrum of Malaysians, regardless of race and religion, who stood by the principles of democracy and freedom. Supporters had gathered outside, waving the flags of his political coalition.

Anwar, the 70-year-old PKR leader, had walked out of the Cheras Rehabilitation Hospital 11.30am on Wednesday a free man after spending a total of eight years in prison over two sodomy charges.

Nurul Izzah, Anwar's daughter, said her father's release was a gift ahead of the holy Islamic month of Ramadan which begins on Thursday in Malaysia.

Najib last month referred to Mahathir's coalition as a "motley collection of parties" that he said would struggle to remain united.

Anwar Ibrahim, the long-term imprisoned Malaysian politician, was released from prison on Wednesday after receiving a royal pardon from the Malaysian king.

Mahathir's Pakatan Harapan coalition staged a stunning victory in last week's general election, defeating Najib's Barisan Nasional bloc, which has held uninterrupted power since 1957.

Malaysian police visited former Prime Minister Najib Razak's house late Wednesday, reportedly searching for documents as part of a renewed probe into a massive corruption scandal involving a state investment fund that is being investigated overseas.

"Although the pardon is the sole product of the king it was Mahathir who facilitated the process", said Anwar, in comments to CNN. "I have forgiven him, he has proved his mettle". The election result was a demand for change and it's the new government's responsibility to ensure that mandate is honored, he said.

Anwar, who needs to contest a by-election to become a member of Parliament, said he doesn't want any Cabinet posts yet as he plans to spend time with his family and travel overseas for speaking engagements.

Mr Mahathir agreed, and further said he meant to hand the prime ministerial post to Mr Anwar within two years.

Anwar's trial became a spectacle, with prosecutors at one stage bringing out what they said was a semen-stained mattress allegedly used when he had sex with two male aides.

Mahathir has said he intends to run the country for "one to two" years before stepping down.
