Thursday, 17, may, Sochi hosted a meeting of Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Syrian counterpart Bashar al-Assad, said the press service of the Russian AP.

The Russian leader said the military successes have created suitable conditions for the resumption of the political process in Syria.

He also visited Putin in Moscow in October 2015, soon after Russian Federation launched its military operation in Syria.

The two leaders discussed the need to strengthen the work on rendering of humanitarian aid to Syrians and economistsview Syria.

Syria has been locked in a vicious civil war since 2011 when the Bashar al-Assad regime cracked down on pro-democracy protests with unexpected ferocity.

"President [Putin] pointed out the Syrian Armed Forces' considerable achievements in struggle with terrorist units and congratulated Assad on this occasion".

"The next task, of course, the economic recovery and humanitarian aid for those people in a hard situation", Mr Putin added.

The latest round of Syria peace talks in the Kazakh capital Astana wrapped up on Tuesday, but did not however make any concrete progress towards ending the seven-year conflict that has cost 350,000 lives.

"Stability is improving, and all that opens the doors to the political process, which we started a while ago", Assad told Putin, according to a transcript of the opening remarks from the meeting posted on the Kremlin website. "I have always said, and I want to reiterate that we have always enthusiastically supported a political process that should proceed hand-in-hand with fight against terrorism", the Syrian leader said.

Russian television broadcast short clips from the two men's discussion.

Regime forces recaptured Ghouta from rebels last month after a ferocious offensive that displaced tens of thousands, both to government-controlled zones around Damascus and to opposition-held parts of northern Syria.
