Kushner receives permanent security clearance, ending uncertainty over his status

Special counsel Robert Mueller's investigators questioned White House senior adviser Jared Kushner about potential Russian collusion his contacts with foreign nationals and potential obstruction issues including the firing of FBI Director James Jared Kushner: Security clearance restored for Trump's son-in-law

But Kushner's permanent clearance was granted after career officials completed the Federal Bureau of Investigation background check process, according to the person familiar with the matter, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the situation.

A month after his security status was downgraded, it was revealed that the special counsel investigating Russian meddling in the 2016 USA presidential election, Robert Mueller, had taken an interest in Kushner's business affairs, including his attempts to gain refinancing of his family's flagship property at 666 Fifth Avenue in Manhattan from foreign entities.

There was also Robert Mueller's probe into Russian interference in the 2016 election, which includes investigations into Kushner's contacts with Russian representatives during the campaign.

Kushner, who serves as a senior adviser on the Middle East and other issues, was among many White House advisers who had been operating for months without full security clearances.

Jared Kushner has been granted permanent security clearance, renewing his access to sensitive intelligence and potentially paving the way for his return to a more active role in the White House.

Kushner's attorney would not rule out that Mueller might ask Kushner for a third interview, though Lowell said it was unlikely.

"His application was properly submitted, reviewed by career officials, and went through the normal process", Abbe Lowell said in a statement. Kushner previously sat for an interview last November, which was largely focused on former national security adviser Michael Flynn, who soon after pleaded guilty to charges of making false statements to the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Kushner was with President Donald Trump while Trump deliberated Comey's fate, during a critical weekend at his golf club Bedminster in May 2017, and he urged his father-in-law to fire Comey. "Having completed these processes, Mr. Kushner is looking forward to continuing the work the president has asked him to do".

Kushner failed to disclose those meetings on his initial applications for security clearance, raising concerns about attempts to hide them.

Lowell told Newsweek that Kushner was one of the first to cooperate in any investigation involving the Trump campaign.

He was with Trump in New Jersey the weekend before former FBI Director James Comey was sacked, and he was among the attendees at a June 2016 meeting at Trump Tower with a Russian lawyer at which the president's oldest son was promised negative information about Hillary Clinton.
