Philip Roth: A literary life in seven stages Novelist Philip Roth has died
Rosie Leonard | 26 May, 2018, 10:59

Pulitzer-winning author Philip Roth was the celebrated and controversial author of Portnoy's Complaint, The Counterlife and other novels.

Prolific novelist Philip Roth, a dominant force in American literature throughout the latter half of the 20th century, has died, USA media said late Tuesday. Roth's death on Tuesday, first reported by the New Yorker and The New York Times, was later confirmed by Roth's literary agent Andrew Wylie.

Roth never won the Nobel Prize, but was awarded almost every other accolade going - including the Pulitzer, National Book Critics Circle Award, and the Man Booker prize for worldwide achievement. When Roth won the Man Booker International Prize, in 2011, a judge resigned, alleging that the author suffered from terminal solipsism and went "on and on and on about the same subject in nearly every single book".

Roth was regarded as a fierce satirist and uncompromising realist, confronting readers in a bold, direct style that scorned false sentiment or hopes for heavenly reward.

'I decided that I was done with fiction, ' he said at the time. And, in 2005, he became only the third living writer to have his books added to the Library of America. Steeped in acerbic humour, which increasingly turned black, several of his best novels, including the American trilogy (American Pastoral, I Married a Communist and The Human Stain) were written in a stunning late-career resurgence.

Roth received a master's degree in English from the University of Chicago. Zuckerman's resemblance to the author prompted some speculation that these books were semi-autobiographical, though Roth swatted away those assertions when asked.

Leading figures in literature, television and academia paid homage to Roth, the author of works including American Pastoral and Portnoy's Complaint, who wrote about topics from the experience of Jews living in America to male sexuality and USA politics.

"Goodbye, Columbus" (1969) RottenTomatoes: 100 percent; IMDb: 6.6 Roth's breakout 1959 book was also the first to win favor in Hollywood, with Richard Benjamin and Ali McGraw playing a young couple in a doomed romance despite their shared Jewish upbringing.

Author Philip Roth poses in New York, Sept. 15, 2010. The character of Nathan Zuckerman is lauded as one of the most memorable characters from his books.

Novelist Philip Roth was presented with the National Humanities Medal in 2011.

"There was nothing more for me to write about", he told the BBC in 2014. "In my life I have had, in total, a couple of months of these completely wonderful days as a writer, and that is enough". His book "When She Was Good" is said to be based in part of his life with Williams, who he said tricked into marriage by pretending she was pregnant.

He first Wednesday Margaret Martinson Williams in 1959 but the couple divorced four years later. A year later, she published a bruising memoir, 'Leaving a Doll's House, ' in which she portrayed him as depressed, remote, self-centered and verbally abusive.
