Harvey Weinstein, Hollywood producer, arrested on rape, sex abuse charges

Harvey Weinstein Turns Himself in to Police to Face Sex Crime Charge in NYC Movie producer Weinstein to surrender on sex assault charges

In a statement, The Women's March said they hope the courage of the women who came forward will "continue to inspire others to break their silence". Weinstein has pleaded not guilty to the charges against him.

Weinstein surrendered to police after the Manhattan District Attorney's office and NYPD's months-long investigation into allegations of sexual abuse.

Speaking to reporters after the hearing, Weinstein lawyer Brafman signaled that he intends to attempt to undermine the credibility of Weinstein's accusers. "We look forward to seeing justice prevail".

This case may be different, especially if Weinstein's financials and emails point to his guilt.

The film producer was to face criminal sex act and rape charges in a NY court, according to a law enforcement official who wasn't authorized to discuss the case and spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity.

After having his mugshots and fingerprints taken, he was escorted out in handcuffs and driven to court in the back of a smart SUV. He has been charged with first-degree rape and third-degree rape in one case and first-degree criminal sex act in another; he has since posted $1 million bail and agreed to wear a monitoring device.

The First Police Precinct station house, where Mr. Weinstein was arrested, was not unfamiliar to him.

To be sure, there was plenty of satisfaction and relief among the scores of Weinstein accusers as the disgraced mogul, who has consistently denied allegations of nonconsensual sex, was arraigned sex charges involving two women, including one rape count.

NY police previously confirmed another credible rape allegation after "Boardwalk Empire" actress Paz de la Huerta accused the former producer of raping her twice at her NY apartment in late 2010.

You can head over to Variety for their full report on Harvey Weinstein turning himself in to NY police, and take a look at a number of tweets from those responding to the arrest, including Rose McGowan's interview on Good Morning America.

Once one of the most powerful men in the film industry, Weinstein had always been rumored to have engaged in sexual misconduct - but it was not until reports in The New York Times and The New Yorker surfaced decades' worth of sexual assault and harassment allegations that the producer experienced his precipitate fall from grace last autumn.

Salma Hayek, Gwyneth Paltrow and Angelina Jolie are among than two dozen actresses who say they were sexually harassed by the producer.

Palmer said on Twitter that all digital proceeds from the song until June 30 will go to the Time's Up legal defense fund for survivors of sexual assault and harassment.

"I have to admit I didn't think I would see the day that he would have handcuffs on him", McGowan told ABC television. But this time Brafman, one of the New York's most prominent defence lawyers, will make his arguments against the backdrop of the #MeToo movement, which was largely sparked by reports of his client's sexual misconduct. He sought treatment for sex addiction at a facility in Scottsdale, Arizona, the New York Times reported.

Actress Rose McGowan, who has accused Weinstein of raping her at the 1997 Sundance Film Festival, said she was "shocked".

"There was a part of me that was terribly naive", Georgina Chapman, his estranged wife and mother of two, told Vogue magazine recently. She told BBC, "Twenty years ago, I swore that I would right this wrong". One of Brafman's past clients, former International Monetary Fund boss Dominique Strauss-Kahn, ultimately escaped criminal prosecution for alleged sexual assault in 2011.

This is the first criminal case brought against him since the accusations surfaced in October. While an unnamed woman is suing for rape.

A grand jury is now considering whether there is enough evidence for Weinstein to go on trial.

While Weinstein is the subject of an active investigation in NY, he's also under investigation for alleged sex crime in Los Angeles and London.
