Justice to hold bipartisan briefing Thursday

Democrats Won't Get Data on Trump Campaign Intel Source How Much Longer Can Rod Rosenstein Protect Robert Mueller?

In an interview with Politico, the former NY mayor Rudy Giuliani, who is also representing Trump, said that information from the meeting could help accelerate the investigation.

Separately on Wednesday, Mueller's prosecutors asked a federal judge to start the process of sentencing former Trump campaign adviser George Papadopoulos, who has been a key witness in the investigation since his plea a year ago to lying to the FBI.

At issue are reports that a longtime us government informant approached members of Trump's campaign in a possible bid to glean intelligence on Russian efforts to sway the election.

The mere existence of a government informant in an investigation doesn't mean a probe is tainted.

Trump and his GOP supporters in Congress are now demanding information on the outside informant, claiming it as proof that the Obama administration was trying to spy on his Republican campaign for political reasons.

"Nothing we heard today has changed our view that there is no evidence to support any allegation that the Federal Bureau of Investigation or any intelligence agency placed a spy in the Trump campaign or otherwise failed to follow appropriate procedures and protocols", Schiff said.

Comey has said he had the authority as a private citizen to ask a friend to share details from one of his memos with the news media and that he did nothing wrong.

The president went on to warn Democrats, saying what goes around comes around.

"We now call it 'Spygate.' You're calling it 'Spygate, '" Trump beamed inaccurately, on the South Lawn.

Trump also tweeted: "Look how things have turned around on the Criminal Deep State".

Trump shot back during a brief news conference with reporters: "What I'm doing is a service to this country and I did a great service to this country by firing James Comey".

"Can anyone even imagine having spies placed in a competing campaign, by the people and party in absolute power, for the sole goal of political advantage and gain?"

Representing U.S. intelligence and law enforcement at the briefing will be Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, FBI Director Christopher Wray, and Director of Intelligence Dan Coats. He then invoked the material compiled by former FBI Director James Comey before he was sacked.

"Excuse me, I have the president of South Korea here", Trump said.

Also raising eyebrows was the fact that Trump Chief of Staff John Kelly and Trump's lawyer Emmet Flood also attended the meetings - the first one at the Department of Justice with Nunes and Gowdy and the second one on Capitol Hill with a bipartisan group of congressional leaders.

Thursday morning, with less than three weeks to go before the highly anticipated meeting between US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, the White House released a Trump-penned letter to Kim canceling the Singapore event, citing Pyongyang's "tremendous anger and open hostility".

Earlier the same day Trump tweeted that individuals paid a large sum of money to place a spy within his campaign and labeled his theory of espionage as "spygate".

U.S. President Donald Trump is on a unsafe path in his open battle with the U.S. Justice Department, which experts bill as a bad sign for the future of U.S. democracy.

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said in a statement that neither Kelly nor Flood actually attended the meetings, but instead made brief remarks about Trump's "desire for as much openness as possible under the law".

The White House now says it is working to facilitate a meeting with a bipartisan group of lawmakers to review classified documents on the Russian Federation investigation this week, instead of after the Memorial Day recess, as promised earlier.

Clapper said Wednesday on ABC's "The View" that the president should welcome the use of an informant who gathered information about his campaign's Russian Federation contacts, since the objective was to gather intelligence about Moscow's nefarious plans. But NPR and other news outlets have identified him as Stefan Halper, a retired professor who served in several Republican presidential administrations.
