Artillery strike kills 50 Taliban chiefs in Afghanistan

Seven attackers killed as Afghan forces stave off major terror bid Suspected Militants Strike Afghan Interior Ministry, Exchange Gunfire With Police

Gunmen dressed as US soldiers set off a vehicle bomb and then tried to shoot their way into the Afghan Interior Ministry before being killed by government forces Wednesday, security officials said.

In addition to the one police officer killed, he said, five were wounded.

Nicholson said that by wearing US military uniforms, militants were trying to confuse security forces and delay their response to the attack.

Some Taliban leaders are participating in private talks with Afghanistan government officials to jumpstart peace talks, even as fighting endures in the 16-year war, the top USA commander in the country said Wednesday.

Kabul has suffered several attacks claimed by ISIS this year including a suicide blast at a voter registration center last month that killed 57 people.

Three attackers, wearing military uniforms, detonated explosives while the others were shot by government troops, officials said.

There was no breach of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation compound, said Lt. Col. Martin O'Donnell, a spokesman for the coalition in Kabul. "We've seen this in other conflicts ... where the two sides were talking about peace at the same time that they were fighting each other on the battlefield".

Earlier in Loghar province, east of Kabul, the Taliban claimed an attack on a police station in the provincial capital Pul-e Alam which killed three police and wounded 12, among them four police and eight civilians. While saying the United States attack had disrupted the Taliban network in Helmand province, including its drug trafficking, Nicholson stopped short of saying the killing of dozens of insurgent commanders would have a decisive impact on the war.

In the eastern Logar province, Taliban suicide bombers attacked a police station, killing at least three policemen.

Another early morning attack struck the capital of Kandahar province, when a suicide auto bomb blast killed three civilians and wounded 13 others, a provincial official told reporters.

Violence has sharply increased in recent weeks since the Taliban, which leads the insurgency against the Afghan government and US -led troops, announced its annual spring offensive.

On Tuesday, Taliban fighters overran the center of Chora district in the southern province of Uruzgan. Sources also said police have not handed over the armored vehicles, used by the attackers, to the NDS for investigation.
