Babchenko is a well-known critic of Russia's policies toward Ukraine. Olechka, I'm sorry, but there were no options here either.

"I'm still alive", he said.

Since Vladimir Putin came to power in 2000, at least 34 Russian journalists have died, allegedly at the hand of military officials, government officials, or political groups.

Making things even stranger, it is now being said by the regime that the entire saga was a lie created to entrap an actual would-be murderer that was planning to kill Arkady Babchenko on the orders of the Russian government.

Less than 24 hours earlier, Ukraine said the reporter had died from three gunshots to the back in the stairwell of his apartment building in a contract-style killing in a case that provoked an outpouring of grief and a diplomatic spat.

Russian investigators have opened their own investigation into the killing and said they are ready to cooperate with Ukraine.

Babchenko surprised reporters at the press conference, and worldwide, when he walked in to the room after Gritsak announced the security service had solved his murder.

"I have buried friends and colleagues and I know the sickening feeling".

"Everything is over from yesterday", Mr Babchenko said. The Ukrainian man also was supposed to procure large quantities of weapons and explosives, including 300 AK-47 rifles and "hundreds of kilos of explosives", to perpetrate acts of terror in Ukraine, he said.

Babchenko left Russian Federation in February 2017 after receiving threats, living first in the Czech Republic, then in Israel, before moving to Kiev.

Reporters Without Borders director Christophe Deloire tweeted his "deepest indignation at the discovery of the manipulation of the Ukrainian secret services".

"The important thing is my life has been saved and other, bigger terrorist attacks have been thwarted", he said.

On February 27, 2017, he wrote on social media that he had left Russian Federation.

The journalist said his home address was published online and the threats he received were made by phone, email and social media.

As a journalist, he criticized his country's annexation of Crimea and the Kremlin's support for separatist Ukrainian rebels. In December 2016, Babchenko had written a Facebook post - about the Kremlin's actions in Aleppo, Syria - which was deemed "insufficiently patriotic" by authorities.

Babchenko, 41, fled his native Russia for Ukraine past year after receiving death threats for criticizing Russian military involvement in Syria. He then he became a war reporter for several Russian newspapers.

Babchenko did not take the intimidation too seriously, according to Ponomarev.

Arkady Babchenko, who was scathingly critical of the Kremlin, was gunned down in the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, on Tuesday. Gritsak added that the detained Ukrainian national's coconspirators consist of former participants of Kiev's ongoing military operation in eastern Ukraine.

"I was lucky, it was my second birthday", he wrote Tuesday.
