The country's Interior Minister, Jan Jambon, told Bel RTL radio on Wednesday that Mr Herman was also behind the murder of his former cellmate, Michael Wilmet, who was bludgeoned to death on Monday night.

The man who killed four people in an attack in the Belgian city of Liege was a "soldier of the caliphate", Islamic State has claimed. The attacker is alleged to have killed the man by hitting him over the head with a blunt object.

The bloodshed in the gritty eastern industrial city of Liege began around 10:30 am Tuesday when the attacker armed with a knife repeatedly stabbed the two officers before using their own firearms to kill them, prosecutors said.

After killing the two police officers and one passerby, he attempted to flee the scene, taking a woman - who Belgian sources identify as a cleaning lady - hostage outside a school.

Dulieu said the attacker then shot and killed a 22-year-old man in a vehicle who was leaving a parking space outside a nearby high school.

Belgian broadcaster RTBF said the gunman was let out from prison on temporary release on Monday where he had been serving time on drug offences. The two police handguns had a total of 17 bullets.

Liege's mayor Willy Demeyer said at a press conference that "physical and psychological support" would be provided to the victims' families, reports said. He was then shot dead by the elite police, prosecutors said. He attacked police in a way recommended by ISIS. Herman allegedly approached the officers from behind, stabbed them multiple times and took their guns, officials said.

Still, Belgium's crisis center said it saw no reason to raise the country's terror threat alert for now.

"The question of whether this man should have been given leave is striking because he killed three completely innocent people with a wish to kill himself", said Geens.

The minister, Prime Minister Charles Michel and Belgium's King Philippe visited the woman in hospital, where she was being treated for shock.

Mr. Herman may have come in contact with extremist inmates, investigators say, and converted to Islam, although no firm connections to a militant terrorist organization that might have helped or encouraged him have been established...

Video captured by bystanders showed crowds running in panic in the area, and the sound of gunshots ringing out across the open area of the Boulevard d'Avroy.

Five people were killed, including the assailant.
