"Oh for Pete's sake", Hume wrote in response to Trump's tweet.

"I just fired the head of the F.B.I. The Corrupt Mainstream Media loves to keep pushing that narrative, but they know it is not true!", the president posted on his Twitter account.

Berman countered by noting that Russian Federation was an undeniable factor in Trump's decision, based on his own words and the memo from Rod Rosenstein saying Russian Federation was part of the justification to fire Comey.

The U.S. Attorney's Office in Washington, D.C., has reportedly interviewed former FBI Director James Comey about whether his deputy, Andrew McCabe, committed a crime by lying to federal agents.

Of course, it does matter why Trump fired the FBI director leading an investigation into his associates. But Thursday's tweet appears to respond to new reports that former Federal Bureau of Investigation acting director Andrew McCabe wrote a secret memo detailing the events, including conversations he had with Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, that led to Comey's firing. Mr. Rosenstein played a key role in the dismissal, writing a memo that rebuked Mr. Comey over his handling of an investigation into Hillary Clinton.

According to the Times story, McCabe believed that Rosenstein may have been providing a cover story for Trump, and that Comey's firing was in fact impelled by the Russian Federation investigation. "He was insane, a real nut job", Mr. Trump said, according to the document, which was read to The New York Times by an American official.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity to The Associated Press to discuss a secret document that has been turned over to special counsel Robert Mueller.

Mueller is investigating Comey's firing as part of his examination into whether Trump obstructed justice, and Rosenstein is supervising Mueller's probe.

On Wednesday night, Giuliani said on Fox News' "Hannity" that the investigation "never should have taken place in the first place" and claimed there were ethical issues within the Justice Department.

"I've talked with Director Mueller about this", Rosenstein said in an interview with The Associated Press past year. Lee said that "based on what I know now, those are not words that I would use to describe this".

According to published reports, McCabe allowed two FBI officials to give information to the media about a separate criminal investigation of the Clinton Foundation. There's been some reporting that the leaks were coming from current or former federal investigators in NY, whom, it's been speculated, have remained close to Rudy Giuliani.

"He fired Comey because Comey would not, among other things, say that he wasn't a target of the investigation", Giuliani said.
