Apple WWDC 2018: An Apple user’s wishlist of announcements

Apple always capitalizes Control Center wherever it’s Apple always capitalizes Control Center wherever it’s

If that sounds familiar, that's because it's similar to Google's recently announced Android updates, which are also meant to combat phone addiction.

But, interestingly, there are reports that Apple will introduce a feature called Digital Health, which lets users monitor their time spent using their iPhones and iPads, as well as offer parental controls.

On 4 June Apple will announce various new products during its WWDC keynote, potentially including iOS 12, macOS 10.14, the iPhone SE2 and HomePod mini.

Apple's got a new iOS 11.4.1 update in beta, but the update probably won't be much more than a collection of bug fixes and patches. Mac Otakara, a blog out of Japan, reports that Face ID could get support for landscape mode.

Launched in 2011 on iPhone 4S, "Siri" is not as evolved as Amazon's "Alexa" and "Google Assistant", The Verge reported this week.

In other announcements, there have been rumours of a new version of the company's iPhone SE being in development, which could also be unveiled at the conference, as could a rumoured cheaper version of the HomePod smart speaker. With disappointing sales figures since HomePod was released February 9, Apple may be looking at broadening the range to appeal to more price-conscious consumers.

Rumors suggest that Apple is working on some kind of update for the MacBook Air, ranging from Apple releasing a cheaper version of the outdated model now for sale according to former KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. But for now, look for Apple to continue to push the Watch as a health and fitness device and introduce new features.

Apple occasionally uses its annual software preview to release a new gadget or the latest version of an existing product line. Apple traditionally releases it new phone models in September, but the first iPhone SE was launched in March 2016, though at a separate event. But this year, a suite of new gadgets is unlikely.

In keeping with recent years the latest macOS will probably be named after a Californian landmark, following in the footsteps of High Sierra, Sierra, El Capitan, Yosemite and Mavericks, unless Apple opts for a new naming convention altogether. Described as its "biggest and baddest laptop so far", it's said to have a hexacore Intel Core i7-8750H. Think about it: Do technology companies really want us to spend less time online?
