Local media reported earlier that the powerful eruption left at least six people dead and 20 more injured.

A search was underway for the missing, though first responders efforts were hindered by the lava flow, officials said.

Fuego volcano, whose name means "fire" in English, spewed an 8 km stream of red hot lava and belched a thick plume of black smoke and ash that rained onto the capital and other regions.

An eruption of volcano, Volcan de Fuego, has killed at least six people in Guatemala.

There were no immediate reports of any casualties, but authorities are advising those close to the crater to evacuate the area.

Firefighters said late Sunday that they had seen some people who were trapped in the area, but roads leading there were cut by pyroclastic flows and they had been unable to reach them.

"It's a river of lava that overflowed its banks and affected the Rodeo village".

Lesser amounts of ash fell on Guatemala City, which is 44km (27 miles) from the volcano.

The eruption forced the Guatemala City's La Aurora global airport to shut down its only runway due to the presence of volcanic ash and to guarantee passenger and aircraft safety, Guatemala's civil aviation authority said in a Tweet.

The runway was closed due to the presence of volcanic ash, Guatemala's civil aviation authority said in a tweet.

Two children were burned to death as they watched the volcano's second eruption this year from a bridge, he added.

The conical Volcan de Fuego reaches an altitude of 12,346 feet above sea level at its peak.

Photos from the scene showed massive plumes of black smoke in the air.

The head of the National Disaster Prevention Authority Sergio Cabañas told a local radio station that a river of lava had changed course towards a small town.

Explosions are still coming from the volcano, said Eddy Sánchez, director of the National Institute for Seismology, Vulcanology, Meteorology and Hydrology of Guatemala known as INSIVUMEH.

David de Leon, spokesman for the disaster agency, said about 300 people evacuated areas near the volcano.
