Teens are abandoning Facebook, Pew study confirms

Our Social Media Accounts Are Driving Us Crazy Our Social Media Accounts Are Driving Us Crazy

According to a new study from the Pew Research Center, roughly half (51%) of US teens ages 13 to 17 say they use Facebook, notably lower than those who use other platforms such as YouTube, Instagram or Snapchat.

This weekend you would have seen New Zealand news outlets saying 45% of teens were online, and Facebook was fading... according to Pew Research center, and while this is true for USA teens it's not so much for NZ teens.

The number of Facebook users is far below the 85 percent of teens on YouTube, 72 percent on Instagram, and 69 percent on Snapchat.

The survey found that Facebook was popular among lower-income teens, with 70 percent of teens living in households earning less than $30,000 using Facebook, while only 36 percent of teens in households that brought in more than $75,000 used the platform.

Google+ and Vine, which were used by 33 percent and 24 percent of teens respectively in the 2014-15 survey, weren't even included in the latest report.

Meanwhile, only 10 per cent of teens say Facebook is their most-used online platform.

"At the time, the use of social networks by teens revolved mostly around Facebook". According to the study, one-third of the subjects taken in the survey said Facebook had a positive impact in their life whereas a quarter said it had a negative impact.

The study found that another 44% say they go online multiple times each day.

However, 35% of teenagers admit that they use Snapchat the most often, while YouTube comes in second at 32%.

The study also probes the effect social media is having on America's youth, and finds almost a third (31%) see it as mostly positive, while almost a quarter (24%) see it as mostly negative.

Those data, combined with decreasing user numbers overall, can be problematic to a social platform hoping to woo more marketers to spend money to appeal to younger consumers-especially those with more disposable income.

Ninety-five percent of teenagers have smartphone access.

The Pew Research Centre has confirmed that Facebook has seen a 20% drop from teens from the ages 13 to 17. The finding also focusses on yet another important aspect of the social media usage, the effect it has on teens life.
