Lava flows cut off access to more Hawaii neighborhoods

The homes lost are in addition to at least 117 destroyed and reported by county officials since lava began spilling from cracks in the ground that opened up in a mostly rural district of the Big Island last month.

"Period", county spokeswoman Janet Snyder said.

"He was very depressed", Okabe said of how Kim felt about losing his vacation home.

Authorities since Wednesday had been urging residents of the area to leave before lava spewing from a volcanic fissure at the eastern foot of Kilauea reached the area.

The United States Geological Survey provides aerial footage of lava pouring into the Big Island's Kapoho Bay.

The report of mounting damage followed a mandatory evacuation order issued Thursday night for a portion of the Leilani Estates subdivision in the midst of "vigorous lava eruptions" threatening homes, the Civil Defense said. The flow has prompted warnings from Hawaii County Civil Defense authorities about laze, a nasty mashup of lava and haze that sends hydrochloric acid and volcanic glass particles into the air. Scientists say they are unsure whether the latest activity is part of the same eruption phase or a new one, and how long it may last.

So too have airborne volcanic glass fibers, called "Pele's hair", wispy strands carried aloft by the wind from lava fountains and named for the volcano goddess of Hawaiian myth.

"Right now, we don't have anything".

Lava now extends more than a half-mile into Kapoho Bay, according to the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory. "And I don't know what to do", she said. "Refusing to evacuate may put you, your family and first responders in danger". Police said a 55-year-old man was arrested last week after he circumvented a traffic checkpoint and crashed his vehicle into a hardened lava flow. The seven individuals will have to appear in court, Hawaii officials said.

As the threat of lava blocking planned the two highway escape routes, contractors have been bulldozing an alternative escape route through the adjacent Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. "This is something most of us will never see in our lifetime", he said.

Kilauea volcano is near-constantly erupting from vents either on its summit (caldera) or on the rift zones. It's not known when the heavily visited Kilauea section of the park will reopen.
