French Open quarter-finals: Nadal v Schwartzman and Cilic v Del Potro

Rafael Nadal 'A lot of players should have won a Major but they didn't' Watch: Rafael Nadal Makes Ball Boy's Day At Roland Garros

It was the second interruption of the match; Schwartzman, a 5ft 7in bundle of energy and snappy ground strokes, was a break up in the second set when the skies first opened.

As a outcome of this, Marin Cilic and Juan Martin del Potro's match has been moved back to Thursday.

Nadal quickly wrapped up the final two points needed to secure the second set and level the match before the world No 1 maintained his ascendancy during the third set with two breaks of serve to move ahead in the match, after saving four break points when he served out.

The 25-year-old took his third set point with a rasping forehand up the line, after being made to wait when a spectator fell ill in the stands.

Rafael Nadal's grip on the French Open title was in danger of being loosened by the unlikely figure of Diego Schwartzman.

Nadal was back on serve immediately when the exuberant underdog put too much on a groundstroke, but Schwartzman regained the advantage with a simple volley to lead 4-3 after toying with the Spaniard.

Nadal then fought back to lead the second set 5-3, before heavy rain brought a halt to the last-eight encounter on Court Philippe Chatrier.

The players were forced off the court for 40 minutes, but when they returned Nadal levelled for 3-3 and let out a trademark roar of "vamos".

Schwartzman's supporters will be hoping he won't be too exhausted from his heroic five-set win over the giant South African Kevin Anderson on Monday and has the self-belief to overcome a 0-5 head-to-head record against Nadal.

"I am very pleased to be in another final in Paris", said Muguruza who has yet to drop a set in the tournament and claimed her first win over Sharapova in four meetings.

The Romanian broke serve six times against a player who made the semi-finals at the Australian Open in January.
