Reports emerging late on Thursday evening suggest a breakthrough has been made as Liverpool look to sign Nabil Fekir from Lyon.

He is said to be the advisor to Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas and was key in making the transfer happen. The two clubs have agreed a transfer fee of 65 million euros plus 7 million in add-ons.

Earlier this week, Fekir's agent Jean-Pierre Bernes insisted discussions between Lyon and Liverpool are ongoing.

Fekir should complete his medical on Friday, which will see Liverpool tie the deal up before the World Cup starts next week.

Liverpool want to wrap up the deal as quickly as possible and announce Fekir's arrival over the course of the weekend.

Fekir's arrival will bring some much needed depth to Liverpool's midfield, and is seen as the flawless replacement for Philipe Coutinho, who transferred to Barcelona in January. Fekir is set to play for France on Saturday evening against the US, a game that will take place in Lyon's Stade des Lumieres.

An agreement with Naby Keita of RB Leipzig was struck this time past year, while Monaco midfielder Fabinho has moved to Anfield as well.

Aulas added: "The whole thing will certainly not be completed during the World Cup, and I don't think anything will change before it".

The Swiss winger was part of the Stoke City side relegated last season and has been clear about his plans to exercise a relegation release clause written into his contract with the Potters.
