Chicago taps Musk's firm to build high-speed tunnel to O'Hare

Known as the Chicago Express Loop, the new system will feature "electric skate" vehicles that will whisk passengers through underground tunnels at speeds up to 150 miles per hour, according to The Boring Co.'s website.

After having won the bid to build Chicago's new transit system today, Elon Musk's Boring Company is now showcasing its latest transport technology: a Tesla Model X with a contraption that enables the all-electric vehicle to drive on rails inside the startup's tunnel.

"We're really excited to work with the mayor and the city to bring this new high-speed public transportation system to Chicago", a Boring Company spokesman said as the company announced the news on Thursday. That should get passengers to the airport in about 12 minutes-still a significant improvement on current options, which often take about 40 minutes by train or vehicle. Maryland's Department of Transportation gave conditional approval to the construction of a tunnel from Baltimore to Washington for a super-high-speed transportation system, The Washington Post reported in October. An official announcement from the city is expected this afternoon, confirming that Musk's company beat out four other developers to win the project.

Then it must tie this all together with a network of above and below-ground stations without running out of money-the fate that has befallen Chicago's previous high-speed transit dreams. But insiders say its plan ran into the same problems as the previous Blue Line proposals: cost (likely in the billions of dollars) and the length of time a trip would take.

Terms of the deal are still being negotiated, but Mayor Rahm Emanuel's office said the project would use Musk's still experimental tunneling concept and so-called Hyperloop transportation technology to connect O'Hare to the long dormant Block 37 superstation started under Mayor Richard M. Daley.

Musk unveiled that undertaking last July, saying the Boring Company had received "verbal govt approval" to build a Hyperloop tube train system that would be capable of whisking passengers from NY to Washington in 29 minutes. The company has said it's faster and cheaper than other subterranean projects.

"We're taking a bet on a guy who doesn't like to fail - and his resources". "The risk-with no financial risk-is I'm betting on guy who has proven in space, auto and now a tunnel, that he can innovate and create something of the future". The new system will come at a cost, however: A single fare will reportedly cost around $20. A source told The Chicago Tribune that the target is in the $20 to $25 range. Video renderings of the system show autonomous vehicles that can pick up passengers at street level and then move them along concrete tubes to their destination.

According to the Boring Company, the skates would have Wi-Fi and be large enough to hold passengers and cargo.
