Apple planning higher-end AirPods, new HomePod for early 2019

The original goal was to get those out by the end of 2018, but development-related challenges have pushed them back to next year.

The over-ear headphones will reportedly have higher sound quality than Apple's Beats line. According to previous rumors, Apple was working on over-the-ear headphones for music loves, but with the new AirPods coming up next year, the new lineup of full-sized headsets is likely to be delayed.

Those same sources added that Apple is putting together AirPods with water resistance (mainly against rain or sweat, not for swimming or anything like that) and noise-cancellation. Apple is also said to be including a new wireless chip to improve the hands-free features.

The company is working on new AirPods with noise-cancellation and water resistance, the people said.

The 2019 AirPods will probably be more expensive than the current $159 model. In addition, the company is working on wireless case charger headphone that will be compatible with the charger AirPower.

Overall, the audio standard and brilliant pairing and charging technologies make AirPods an attractive prospect for Apple fans looking to invest in new wireless headphones for use across the entire product range. Thus far, the company has used Inventec and Luxshare Precision for manufacturing but it has struggled to meet demand.

The first product on the docket is the AirPods. We don't know much about these, but Bloomberg's sources say that they'll be Apple-branded.

Meanwhile, both Bloomberg and longtime Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo previously tipped Apple to release over-the-ear noise-cancelling headphones but noted that the company had dealt with production issues putting them together. The current HomePod was built with Inventec but production has since expanded to Foxconn.

Apple's AirPods did not exactly wow the world when they arrived - not least because, come on, pay the licensing fee and call them "AirBuds". These are said to have Apple branding and will be the high-end alternatives to the firm's Beats line.
