Heat wave death toll reaches 17 in Montreal

Heat wave Heat warnings in effect for parts of the country on Canada Day weekend
Glenn Montgomery | 05 July, 2018, 04:53

Isolated adults, seniors, young children, people experiencing homelessness and people with certain mental health illnesses, chronic illnesses, heart and lung issues or limited mobility are at greater risk of heat-related illnesses.

"This setup will allow cooler and less humid air to flow from central Canada and into the Northeast and much of the Midwest", according to the report. "We're inviting the population to be vigilant for the next two days - for themselves as well as those close to them".

Environment Canada warns this extreme heat event will continue though for most of the week, calling this streak the most significant heat event in the past few years.

Officials across the province advised people to drink plenty of water and check in on neighbours or relatives and, if need be, get them to a place where air conditioning is available.

An extended heat warning issued by the city's medical officer of health on Sunday remains in effect. The temperature in the city reached 40 C on Wednesday when factoring in the humidity, and the heat is expected to last until Friday.

"It could save a life", Genereux said.

"All of the deaths that we have identified are in a context of no air conditioning and where the measured temperature when the paramedics arrive is very high".

Dr. Mylene Drouin, head of public health for the Montreal region, said the number of fatalities has risen since authorities first announced six deaths on Tuesday, but that the spike is not unexpected.

In the Eastern Townships region southeast of Montreal, four deaths are under investigation to determine if they are related to the extreme heat.

Montreal's civil services have announced the introduction of measures aimed at ensuring the well-being and safety of residents, including a door-to-door operation created to reach at-risk people and to provide prevention advice in certain areas.

Urgences-sante said it has been inundated by the volume of calls - 1,200 calls per day in Montreal and nearby Laval over the past four days, which is 30 per cent more than usual on busy days.
