Both sides in the increasingly acrimonious dispute took to the Sunday political talk shows at the start of what promises to be an epic tussle over the ninth seat on the nation's highest court.

Mr. Trump has reportedly narrowed his list down to four names: Judge Amy Coney Barrett of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit, Judge Thomas Hardiman of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit, Judge Brett Kavanaugh of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit and Judge Raymond Kethledge of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit.

The only problem is, he hasn't announced his nominee yet.

In an earlier interview on "This Week", Stephanopoulos asked Leonard Leo, who is on leave from the conservative Federalist Society to advise Trump on his Supreme Court pick, about the concern that anyone on Trump's list of potential nominees would oppose Roe v. Wade.

Now key players in the appointment are reining back on the suggestion that the newly-composed court will target the pro-abortion ruling and re-criminalise the practice. The White House has been preparing information materials on all four, who were part of a longer list of 25 names vetted by conservative groups.

Republican Sens. Lindsey Graham of SC and Roy Blunt of Missouri said Sunday that they believe any of the top four contenders could get confirmed by the GOP-majority Senate.

"First of all, nobody really knows".

"Am I optimistic that [Trump is] going to nominate somebody that I would feel comfortable about?" said McCaskill. Donald Trump could nominate George Washington or John Marshall and they couldn't get through.

The South Carolina senator said Democrats from red states will have a hard time opposing any of those judges. A day later, Trump interviewed three other individuals.

Reuters reported last week that conservative federal appeals court judges Kethledge and Brett Kavanaugh were the two most serious contenders being considered by Trump for the Supreme Court, citing a source familiar with the process.

"These are the people, keep in mind, who consider themselves to be the most open-minded, the most tolerant", he said. He was confirmed by the Senate 52-44.
