The 13,019-acre fire was 32 percent containment as of Sunday morning, according to fire officials.

On the California-Oregon border, crews battled a fire that ignited Thursday and moved swiftly through a region that is home to many retirees, said Ray Haupt, chairman of the Siskiyou County Board of Supervisors.

Santa Barbara County Fire Chief Eric Peterson thanked residents for self evacuating and following evacuation orders on Friday night, saying he believes there would have been fire-related fatalities if they had not done so.

The fire's spread was stopped at about 100 acres (40.5 hectares) or less and teams were working on an accurate tally of damage in the neighborhood, where some houses were in ruins while homes next door were intact. A house fire got out of control and spread into residential areas in the hills above Goleta, authorities said. Elsewhere in Northern California, the County Fire has charred 88,375 acres (35,764 hectares) in sparsely populated wooded areas of Napa and Yolo Counties.

The fire was about 81 percent contained Saturday, but left behind a trail of burned cars and homes.

The blaze, however, continues to burn to the southeast and into the Klamath National Forest, fire officials said.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials say Joergensen has been living in the country illegally. Their home is now a dusty pile of ash and mangled metal, torched by a fast-moving fire in Southern California.

Another wildfire in the San Bernardino National Forest was holding at 1.5 square miles and forced evacuation of about 700 homes in the mountain community of Forest Falls.

"Firefighters will continue to do aggressive mop-up of hot spots in the impacted area", the county said in a statement announcing the changes.

It's the first California wildfire to kill a civilian since last December. Ten structures were counted destroyed but damage assessments were continuing.

The blaze consumed an estimated 20 structures, including homes and other types of buildings.

It grew to 22,000 acres Saturday, but conditions helped firefighters reach a 20 percent containment, officials said.

Firefighters are making progress on a wildfire that has burned more than 130 homes and blackened almost 170 square miles (440 square kilometers) in southern Colorado.

Video from news helicopters showed fire crews running along Interstate 8 and trying to quell the flames that were spreading along the side of the freeway. A stretch of busy US Highway 285 between Fairplay and Antero Junction reopened Saturday.
