Pres. Trump: 'Very Close' To Making Final Supreme Court Pick Trump plays up suspense over momentous Supreme Court nomination
Glenn Montgomery | 10 July, 2018, 06:43

Speaking from the East Room of the White House Monday night, President Trump announced Brett Kavanaugh as his choice to replace retiring Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy.

During an appearance on MetroNews "Talkline", Capito said she wants Trump to nominate a judge similar to Gorsuch, who she voted to confirm previous year. Kavanaugh, who serves on the Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit, is expected to be less receptive to abortion and gay rights than Kennedy was. For instance, his ties to former President George W. Bush, who appointed him - that could potentially be seen as too establishment for President Trump. If confirmed, Kavanaugh would replace long-serving conservative Justice Anthony Kennedy, who announced his retirement on June 27 at age 81.

Kavanaugh also worked with special counsel Ken Starr during the Whitewater investigation of President Bill Clinton.

Donald Trump has chosen federal appeals court judge Brett Kavanaugh as his nominee for US Supreme Court Justice.

Leonard Leo, who is on leave from the Federalist Society and has been advising Trump over the court nomination, said he assumes Kavanaugh, Barrett, Hardiman and Kethledge "are the four" who are getting the most focus.

They're all younger than 55 and conservative enough to make a first cut. Democratic senators running for re-election in states Trump carried in 2016 will face pressure to back his nominee. However, he later wrote that he thought presidents shouldn't have to deal with criminal investigations or civil lawsuits while in office. But four Democrats from states Trump won in 2016 voted to confirm Supreme Court Justice Neil Gorsuch previous year, leaving the Republicans room for error. The ads, costing a total of $1.4 million to run, will feature biographical information about the nominee and will be aimed at red state Democrats, including newly elected Sen.

Barrett clerked for Scalia and earned high praise from conservatives for her answers about her Catholic faith at a Senate confirmation hearing previous year.

"There is no one in America more qualified for this position and no one more deserving", said Trump in his prime-time televised address from the White House, calling Kavanaugh "one of the sharpest legal minds of our time".

Donald Trump has named Brett Kavanaugh as his nominee for the USA supreme court, lighting the fuse of an acrimonious political battle and potentially setting the court on a more conservative course for decades to come. Since 2006, he has been a judge on the federal appeals court in Washington.

Democratic Senator Dianne Feinstein said Trump's choice "could have a bigger effect on Americans' daily lives than any justice in our lifetime". Without Republican defections, however, Senate rules leave Democrats with scant options to block confirmation of Trump's nominee. "At this critical juncture, with so many rights and liberties at stake, US Senators and the American people should expect an affirmative statement of support for the personal liberties of all Americans from the next Supreme Court nominee". But in terms of selecting his nominee, the president said he would not use Roe v. Wade as a litmus test for a nominee. Heidi Heitkamp of North Dakota, Joe Donnelly of IN and Joe Manchin of West Virginia.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, one of the most prominent Jewish members of Congress, indicated that Kavanaugh would reverse the Roe v. Wade ruling if given the opportunity. While he has yet to reveal his sentiments on the 1973 Supreme Court decision that established a constitutional right to abortion access, he was involved with a dispute over whether a pregnant migrant woman who was being held by immigration authorities could receive an abortion in 2017, according to the Los Angeles Times. In January, the full appeals court upheld the legality of the CFPB structure and said the director could be fired only for cause.

Still, some of the 1.2 percent of votes when Collins bucked a Republican president's nominee were notable.
