Mr Trump said the letter from Mr Kim (dated 6 July), was "a very nice note". "Great progress being made!"

The secretary of state did not meet Kim as he had on his previous two trips to Pyongyang this year, and after his departure, the North's foreign ministry accused the US of making "gangster-like" demands that it unilaterally give up its nuclear weapons.

Kim expresses "invariable trust and confidence" in the president and wishes that "epochal progress" in promoting relations will "bring our next meeting forward".

He wrote: "I deeply appreciate the energetic and extraordinary efforts made by Your Excellency Mr President for the improvement of relations between the two countries and the faithful implementation of the joint statement".

While visiting Pyongyang last week, Mr Pompeo said that a Pentagon team would meet with the North's officials in or around Panmunjon - the truce village on the border between North and South Korea.

"We will be ready", Mr Nauert said.

Trump has touted the return of remains as one of the successes of his historic June 12 summit with Kim in Singapore.

North Korea, meanwhile, lashed out at Washington for presenting "gangster-like demands" for complete, verifiable and irreversible denuclearization.

According to the Pentagon, North Korean officials have indicated in the past that they have the remains of as many as 200 U.S. troops.

North Korean officials did not show up to a planned meeting with US officials at the demilitarized zone Thursday, where they were expected to continue discussions on repatriating the remains of Americans killed during the Korean War, a senior USA official tells CNN.

The Americans called North Korean representatives and scheduled a generals' meeting between the two nations to take place Sunday.

In another apparent setback, the U.S. accused Pyongyang of violating sanctions on refined oil products and ordered the United Nations security council to immediately halt all related deliveries to North Korea. The letter was dated July 6, 2018, and was addressed to "H.E. Donald J. Trump", in what appears to be the latest sign that the two men were getting along after making history at the first-ever meeting between a sitting US president and North Korean supreme leader in Singapore last month.

There is speculation that North Korea may also want payment for the return of the remains, our correspondent adds.

The Pentagon says Pyongyang has indicated several times they have as many as 200 sets of remains that could be those of U.S. soldiers who died in the war.

A US official waited at the border truce village of Panmunjom but no North Korean official showed up, South Korea's Yonhap news agency said, citing a Seoul diplomatic source. A total of 7,697 personnel remain unaccounted for from the Korean War.

Between 1996 and 2005, some 33 recovery operations were conducted in North Korea which saw 200 sets of remains returned.

Attached were two images of the letter - one in Korean and the other an English translation.
