The US President arrives after giving North Atlantic Treaty Organisation leaders a tongue-lashing in Brussels over defence spending and controversial comments about Britain being in "turmoil". Trump and the first lady will then have tea with Queen Elizabeth II at Windsor Castle in the afternoon. He might also play a round of golf at his resort in Scotland.

"The spirit of friendship and co-operation between our countries, our leaders and our people, that most special of relationships, has a long and proud history".

He claimed that he had forced allies to commit to billions extra in defence spending over and above a previous target of two percent of GDP.

The United States pays more than any other member on defense - about 3.5 percent on NATO-related measures and 67 percent overall.

During his 28 hours there, Trump had disparaged longtime North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies, cast doubt on his commitment to the mutual-defense organization and sent the 29-member pact into frenzied emergency session.

Mrs May said the United Kingdom visit would be an opportunity to boost trade links and strengthen co-operation on security. I actually told Theresa May how to do it but she didn't agree, she didn't listen to me.

Dick said they will be linked through to units at the same level in sectors such as the intelligence world.

Earlier, Trump dictated his concerns on Twitter. "The President is merely trying to get as impactful a trip as he can get in a 24-hour period". "They pay only a fraction of their cost".

Then, in a head-snapping pivot at the end, he declared the alliance a "fine-tuned machine" that had acceded to his demands to speed up increases in military spending to relieve pressure on the USA budget.

"On top of it all, Germany just started paying Russian Federation, the country they want protection from, Billions of Dollars for their Energy needs coming out of a new pipeline from Russian Federation", read another.

Right-wing think tank Bow Group is holding a pro-Trump rally in Westminster to show support for the president.

He had earlier used personal language, referring to the German chancellor as "you, Angela".

He was met at Stansted Airport by dignitaries including International Trade Secretary Liam Fox and the U.S. ambassador Woody Johnson.

His wife, who will spend Friday with the prime minister's husband, Philip May, is likely to experience some of it when she visits a school in the city. On the issue, NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg has said he hopes to reach an agreement to fund Afghan security forces until 2024.

Trump's Brexit comments came on the same day May's government published long-awaited proposals for Britain's relations with the European Union after it leaves the bloc next year.

On Friday, Trump will bypass the mass protests in London as he heads to the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst with May for a military display, before talks at her country residence, Chequers.

He said: "We have enough difficulty with the European Union".

The US President described Britain as a "pretty hot spot right now with a lot of resignations" and suggested his meeting with Vladimir Putin in Helsinki on Monday could be easier.

It comes as thousands of Scots prepare to greet the President by staging two major protests against his visit, the first in Glasgow on Friday evening and the second in Edinburgh on Saturday.
