Williams will take on fellow former world No.1 Angelique Kerber in Saturday's showpiece final after overpowering German 13th seed Julia Goerges 6-2 6-4 in just her 13th match back since returning to the court after more than a year's maternity leave.

On Saturday, No. 25 seed Williams will face 11th-seeded Angelique Kerber, who advanced with a 6-3, 6-3 defeat of the risk-taking Jelena Ostapenko, in a reprise of Wimbledon's 2016 final. An eighth Wimbledon title would put Williams one behind Martina Navratilova for most championships at the All England Club.

Consecutive Ostapenko backhand errors handed 10th seed Kerber the first break and she proceeded to win seven of the next eight games basically by defending well and serving solidly to move into a 5-1 lead in the second set. "For me, I only see joy out of it", Williams said with a smile.

Goerges could only find the tram lines with a forehand down the line as Williams forced the first break, and a swirling cross-court forehand proved too hard for her to return as the first set went the way of the imperious American. "I had a really tough delivery, and I had to have multiple surgeries and nearly didn't make it, to be honest".

Serena Williams of the USA celebrates winning her semi final match against Germany's Julia Goerges.

Williams' match against Goerges was even until 2-all, 30-all.

The 36-year-old American, who gave birth 10 months ago, is the first mother to reach the last round of the tournament since Australian Evonne Goolagong in 1980.

"I couldn't even walk to my mailbox, so it's definitely not normal to be in a Wimbledon final". She's coming back and for me also I'm coming back from 2017.

Williams' match against Goerges featured two of the best servers around, and began quite evenly, until 2-all, 30-all. "We saw that she improved every single match she's playing here".

"Whatever happens, honestly it's an incredible effort from me. and good motivation to keep going for the rest of my career", Williams added.

But Serena had already made her mark on the tournament this year before she ever stepped foot on Centre Court.

"I didn't expect to play this well so quickly into my comeback", Williams said after the match. Second serve points won: Ostapenko (41 per cent), Kerber (73 per cent).

"She knew how to win that match by her experience, and".

"To be perfectly honest, I haven't thought about that this tournament".

On her third opportunity, the German drilled a winning return and raised her clenched fist into the clean Wimbledon sky. "It's by far the toughest", she said.
