Had the hearing not gone well, Connor could have been suspended or fired. "Why can't I go out there and say the things the president says?'"

Irizarry, who was in the Chicago's Caldwell Woods Forest Preserve when she was confronted by Trybus, recounted the feeling of helplessness she felt after Trybus asked if the flag on the shirt was that of Texas and responded that it was the flag of Puerto Rico.

The man seen in a viral video harassing a woman for wearing a Puerto Rican flag shirt has been charged with a hate crime. State Senator Omar Aquino urged Irizarry to sue the officer, reminding her that he pushed through legislation that allows her to "sue someone for a hate crime". "If you were an American, you wouldn't be wearing that". Because of the Puerto Rican flag shirt Irizarry is wearing, the man in the video asks if she is a USA citizen and says "you're not going to change us, you know that?" and "the world is not going to change the United States of America". As Trybus badgered her, Irizarry began taking a video on her phone, while calling out to the Forest Preserve officer for help. Are you a citizen? "Are you a citizen?" "Then you should not be wearing that".

Nonetheless, Officer Connor still has defenders. "I am renting this area and he's harassing me about the shirt that I'm wearing".

"It was extremely surreal to think that someone whose job is to protect and serve could just completely walk away..." she said at a park in a Chicago neighborhood with a large Puerto Rican population, in her first public comments about the incident.

As Trybus continued to rant, at times getting very close to Irizzary, she continued to ask Connor for assistance. "Officer, officer, I feel highly uncomfortable", repeatedly asking Officer Patrick Connor, standing nearby, to do something about the incident.

When Irizarry's brother interposed himself between the Trybus and his sister-remaining at least 6 feet from Trybus-Connor told Irizarry's brother to back away. "We might start with the fine example presented by Mia Irizarry and her family, who handled this ugly incident with great composure, never stooping to the level of the man who attacked her". When the new officers arrived, they arrested Trybus on charges of misdemeanor assault and misdemeanor disorderly conduct.

Still the 36-minute video of the confrontation posted by Mia Irizarry, the woman targeted in the vide left many people upset.
