British caver says he's consulting lawyers over Elon Musk's comments

Thailand cave rescuer considers legal action against Elon Musk for 'pedo' comment Elon Musk makes unfounded accusation against Thai cave rescuer

Tesla CEO Elon Musk is in hot water after attacking a diver who helped in the high-profile rescue of boys who were recently trapped in a Thai cave.

Unsworth dismissed it as a PR stunt, telling Musk he could "stick his submarine where it hurts".

Musk responded on Sunday in a freakish series of tweets referring to Unsworth, without using his name, as "pedo guy".

Unsworth said he would talk to lawyers about a possible lawsuit against Musk upon returning to Britain. "I believe he's called me a paedophile", he told journalists. "I think people realise what sort of guy [Musk] is".

In a now-deleted tweet responding to Zeynep Tufekci, a New York Times writer who wrote an opinion column lightly criticizing Musk's well-publicized offers to help, Elon Musk wrote, "You know what, don't bother showing the video. I have given vastly more to humanitarian causes".

The BBC has contacted Mr Musk, via his company Tesla, for comment. But the boys were saved by a volunteer rescue team.

Since then, he has been arguing with people who accuse him of shoehorning himself into the drama and imagining hypotheticals in which rescuers had not deemed his hastily built submarine unnecessary and impractical.

The drama comes amid a crisis at Tesla, which has yet to prove that profitable, high-quality mass production of its Model 3 electric sedan is achievable.

What's weird about Musk's tweet is that it came on July 15, a full five days after the boys were rescued. He has even called the beloved Thai rescue chief commander "not the subject matter expert" in response to the leader's comments regarding the practicality of Musk's submarine.

The investors went on to say that Musk's behavior was "fueling an unhelpful perception" of his leadership - calling it "thin-skinned and short-tempered".

Though Musk later deleted the tweet, he also later tweeted out another now-deleted message saying he'd bet a signed dollar that his claim of pedophilia was correct.

Tesla stock plunged 3% on Monday on news that Musk called the diver a "pedophile guy" and of his controversial political contributions to Republican campaign groups. The company's managing director tweeted:"All it takes is a public apology Mr Musk and i will reverse our decision".

"I'm not going to make any further comment about him", Unsworth continued. When asked about whether he would consider pressing charges against the billionaire for damaging his reputation he reportedly responded, "Yes, it's not finished".

Munster said this Twitter exchange with Unsworth "crossed the line".

He said Mr Musk appeared to be following in the footsteps of US President Donald Trump in using Twitter to vent frustration and insult anyone with whom he disagrees.

James Anderson, one of the largest shareholders in Tesla, told the Guardian that he planned to convey his concerns to the company.
