"Just heard a loud noise, the delivery boy said there was an explosion at the USA embassy", the Hong Kong Free Press cited a Chinese-speaking witness as saying on the microblogging website Weibo.

Video and images posted show smoke rising from the vicinity of the embassy in the heart of the Chinese capital, with crowds gathering. Some witnesses claimed that they heard a blast, however, the nature of the explosion is yet to be determined. No damages have been reported so far.

USA embassy officials did not immediately comment.

The roads around Beijing's United States embassy were chaotic, but reopened on Wednesday afternoon after two attempted attacks just hours earlier.

He was injured on the hand by the explosive device, which was made from fireworks, police said.

The BBC said the man was named by police as Jiang Moumou, from Inner Mongolia province. The embassy confirmed that the man who detonated the device was the only person injured.

After the initial reports, news of the incident was very quickly censored on Chinese social media.

Exact information regarding the cause of the explosion still remains unknown at the moment, as reported by the Mirror.

Staff members at the Indian and South Korean embassies said they were unaware of any unusual incident and were working as normal.

State-run Global times reported a woman "spraying gasoline on herself" as she was taken away from outside the USA embassy in what appeared to be a self-immolation attempt.
