Around 43 quakes were recorded after the initial 6.4 magnitude tremor, with the largest aftershock recorded at 5.7 magnitudes, said the disaster mitigation agency.

An emergency tent was set up on a street in Sembalun to treat the injured because the local hospital was damaged, and those in a critical condition were taken to other hospitals.

Mount Rinjani National Park said in a Twitter message on Monday that a key route, Senaru, had been reopened for people to come down.

However, they are unlikely to reach the base before nightfall, and the evacuation will most likely stretch into Tuesday.

Nugroho said that the foreign visitors come from the U.S., UK, Malaysia, Canada, France, Netherlands, Thailand and Singapore.

The Malaysian Embassy here is making arrangements to bring home the remains of the Malaysian woman killed in the quake in Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia.

"The natural disaster was very strong... and everybody in my house panicked, we all ran outside", said Zulkifli, a resident of North Lombok near the epicentre.

'A number of British nationals are confirmed safe; we are continuing to monitor the situation'.

No hikers are injured, he added.

More than half of the world's active volcanoes above sea level are part of the ring.

The shallow quake early Sunday damaged more than 1,400 houses and was felt on neighbouring Bali, where no damage or casualties were reported. Many houses are damaged in the quake.

Thai national Thanapon Worawutchainan, who was at the summit when the quake occurred, posted a video on Facebook showing people stumbling down the slopes in the aftermath.

He said the Malaysian government was ready to provide further aid to their Indonesian counterparts as necessary.

"Indonesia is prone to earthquakes due to its location on the Pacific 'Ring of Fire, ' an arc of volcanoes and fault lines in the Pacific Basin".
