Manchester United 1 Liverpool 4: Substitutes Sturridge & Shaqiri settle derby ICC clash

Mourinho upset over lack of new signings Jose Mourinho
Eugene Bates | 30 July, 2018, 07:02

We're sure we are all getting a little bit bored of Jose Mourinho's persistent whinging this summer about a lack of players (because Manchester United are obviously the only team in the world to have sent players to the World Cup) - but the latest injury news couldn't have come at a worse time for the disgruntled Portuguese manager.

Mourinho, whose side were level with Liverpool at half-time before the Reds scored three unanswered goals, continued: "This is not a step for anything, the majority of the payers which played are not going to play some of them are not even going to belong to the squad". We still played simple and quick, kept them moving.

Honestly, United produced absolutely nothing in this outing except Andreas Pereira's beauty of a free-kick. I don't see the need [to sign a defender]. We are playing here just to survive and to have some not very happy results. "And the poor man is there trying his best with the frustration of someone who wants more". Shaqiri, of Switzerland, was one of five recent high profile signings which saw Liverpool shell out more than 200mn pounds ($260mn US) in an attempt to close the gap on Premier League champions Manchester City.

Mourinho praised Ivorian defender Eric Bailly for stepping in after Smalling had pulled up moments before the game.

Compounding United's problems, Mourinho revealed Serbian worldwide Nemanja Matic would miss the start of the season after undergoing surgery in Philadelphia to address an undisclosed injury. It is not fair for Alexis, (Juan) Mata, (Ander) Herrera and the guys that are there.

Liverpool started on top and Lee Grant had to be sharp to tip over Salah's header from a clever Mane pass, both Reds forwards making their first starts of pre-season.

With Dejan Lovren still on a post-World Cup break and Joel Matip at home nursing an injury, the youngster could be handed a chance to stake his place alongside back Virgil van Dijk when Liverpool kick off their Premier League campaign against West Ham on August 12.

Mourinho is keen to strengthen his squad before the transfer deadline with Tottenham's Toby Alderweireld and Harry Maguire, of Leicester, reported defensive targets.

"But I am not thinking I am going to have two".

"I would like to have two more players", Mourinho said. "I know the one who are ready for anything, and I know the ones who are not ready". "I wouldn't come. I wouldn't spend my money to see these teams", Mourinho said.
