Catharina Fröjd, who works at Strängnäs cathedral, called the theft "an enormous loss in cultural value and economic value". The crowns and orb are adorned with precious stones and gold as well as pearls. A spokesperson for the cathedral said that the alarm went off as designed, and security precautions were in place at the time, the Post said. It gave no further details. They are still on the run despite an expansive police hunt.

The two men dashed to a boat docked nearby.

Police have been searching for the culprits with a helicopter and boats, but no arrests have been made. Sweden's third-largest freshwater lake.

Having taken the national treasures on Tuesday afternoon, while staff were present in the church, the perpetrators promptly jumped into a small motor boat moored below the church and made away with the loot.

Maria Ellior of the Swedish police's National Operations Department told TT that the items are "impossible to sell".

They asked the public for help, while Sweden's main news agency, TT, said an worldwide inquiry for the artifacts would be made in Interpol's system.

The cathedral was closed today, and a grassy area by the jetty was cordoned off as police inspected the ground for clues.

"One of my friends saw two people running", a witness told Royal Central.

The stolen artifacts are funeral regalia, which are placed inside or on top of a coffin to symbolize a deceased royal's identity and social ranking.

Sweden's royal family still regularly captures Europe's attention with glamour, gossip - and the shiny crown jewels that are put on public display whenever the occasion merits it. They were buried in the cathedral which is located some 58 kilometers (37 miles) west of Stockholm.
