Trump says Koch brothers are ‘a total joke’ in GOP

"For those who stand in the way, we don't pull any punches, regardless of party", Phillips told hundreds of donors while outlining their midterm election strategy on the final day of a three-day private Rocky Mountain retreat.

"The fact that we're doing this in an election year shows we're darn serious", AFP CEO Emily Seidel told the Hill.

This isn't the first time the Koch brothers have disagreed with Trump-in fact, they didn't financially back his 2016 campaign.

The Kochs' decision nonetheless sends a strong message to Republicans that there may be real consequences for those unwilling to oppose Trump.

CNN contributor Marc Short, who worked for the Koch brothers as well as the Trump administration, said, "I think what is important for the media and American public to know is Charles and David never wanted to be Republicans".

Charles and David Koch have been a force in American politics for decades, channeling billions of dollars into conservative causes. Heidi Heitkamp (D-N.D.) as Republicans fight to maintain their majority in the Senate. The lack of an endorsement in a key race comes as the network is trying to put forward a more bipartisan face.

"I regret some of the lawmakers we have supported", Koch said.

Some Trump loyalists were furious at perceived contradictions in the Koch network's behaviour and anxious that it could complicate the president's 2020 re-election.

On Monday, the political advocacy network created by the billionaire industrialists announced it would not back the GOP candidate in the North Dakota Senate race.

Sanders thanked the Koch network by name. "But they were willing to support the tax cut and the deregulation, while opposing the heart of Trumpism - trade and immigration". But the group says it still plans to focus resources and funds to help Republican Senate candidates in Tennessee, Florida and Wisconsin.

But trade - and Trump's aggressive actions on tariffs - remain a sticking point for some of the Koch stalwarts.

Trump, perhaps indirectly, alluded to the reasons why some Republicans voted for him two years ago and continue to support him while questioning some of his tactics and rhetoric.

Trump held a rally in Tampa on Tuesday in a show of force for DeSantis, who faces off against state Agriculture Commissioner Adam Putnam in the state's August 28 Republican primary.

But Trump's recent tariff battles with China, Mexico and other countries have cooled Pope's enthusiasm.

The Koch brothers have been consistent critics of the president's hard-line trade policies. That could mean Republican candidates who seek to closely align themselves with Trump on trade are forgoing backing from groups like the Koch network.

"After a while, you forget who's the senator", Trump said.
