England reach lunch with Cook the only casualty

A frightful run-out of Joe Root sparked an England collapse on day one of the first Test against India at Edgbaston.

Kohli came into the series with huge questions marks about his ability to score in England - he averaged just 13.40 on India's last tour of England in 2014.

English cricket team reached a milestone on 1 August becoming the first team to play their 1,000th Test match in the 142-year history of Test cricket.

Earlier, resuming the third session 160/6 and still trailing by a good margin, Kohli continued his solo act after bringing up his half century just before tea. "And now the India captain has confidence".

"I am not sure [that Edgbaston is my best]".

"I didn't see it in the middle", Root told Sky Sports before the start of the second day's play. Kohli thought, "You're going to boo me? That was a lovely zone to be in".

"It was hard. I told myself it was important to enjoy this, take it upon me as a challenge to take the team far", said Kohli when asked about his mindset in the middle where the other batsmen struggled.

The fight he waged against England's bowling attack was a quiet one for the most part.

On Thursday, spectators once again witnessed India's batting order getting collapsed as Virat Kohli fought a lone battle.

He put together a 48-run partnership for the sixth wicket with all-rounder Hardik Pandya.

Then it was into the tail, and Kohli responded with 92 runs from 116 balls; the three tailenders accounted for 8 runs from 37 balls. Among them was former Pakistan pacer Shoaib Akhtar who was generous in his appreciation for Kohli. I think it was an outstanding effort from them also.

"We stuck to our plans very well against him, and on another day they would carry", he said.

But the now 29-year-old India skipper surpassed that total in one innings with a knock of 149 during the second day's play of the series opener at Edgbaston.

The England captain failed to reach stumps on day two after the hosts finally ended India's fightback just short of a lead and set themselves the task of navigating the final few overs of the evening.

That was when Sam Curren was thrown the ball and in the spate of eight deliveries the left-arm pace ace got three wickets.
