Russia Deploys Military Police on Golan Heights

UN peacekeepers return after 4 years to Israel-occupied Golan Heights near Syria Israel says Assad back in charge, Syrian front likely to be quieter

"We, the IDF, hold the Syrian regime, the Assad regime, responsible for everything that happens on the Golan Heights and any threat that emanates from the Golan Heights toward Israel".

The U.N. peacekeeping forces first deployed along the frontier in 1974 following an agreement to separate Syrian and Israeli forces after Israel occupied the Golan Heights in the 1967 war.

In a nod to his battlefield gains, Israel described victory by Assad, who is on a last push to restore his rule after more than seven years of civil war, as a fait accompli that could calm the Golan Heights. Russian Federation on Wednesday said that Iran had withdrawn its heavy weaponry to about 50 miles from the border, a measure Israeli officials said was inadequate.

Israel has now closed its border with Syria and will no longer provide medical help and others forms of humanitarian aid to people who are trying to cross into the Jewish state.

Jordan has been in discussions with Russian authorities, Safadi said, and will respond to Syria's request "positively" in a way that supports Jordanian and Syrian interests.

Israel has now asked Russian Federation to ensure Assad's forces will not carry out a massacre of the thousands of Syrian civilians who fled their homes during the offensive and are camping out along the Israeli border.

The Tel Aviv regime, at the time, claimed that its assault was in response to a barrage of 20 rockets fired from Syria at Israeli military outposts in Golan.

That message was conveyed by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to Russian President Vladimir Putin when they met in Moscow last month, a senior Israeli official said.

Reflecting the return to normalcy in southern Syria, the UNDOF has announced that their observer forces are returning to the frontier between Quneitra and the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights.

Ambassador Anatoly Viktorov told Channel 10 in Israel Russia can not compel Iranian forces to leave Syria because they are playing a crucial role in defeating "terrorists". The two sides discussed a Russian proposal that would see any forces linked to Iran distanced some 100 kilometers (62 miles) away from the Golan Heights.

A series of blistering offensives backed by Moscow and Tehran has forced the fighters out of many of their strongholds, putting Assad's regime back in control of almost two-thirds of the country.
