Ohio State University put coach Urban Meyer on leave on Wednesday while it investigates allegations the football coach knew about a 2015 domestic violence incident involving a former assistant years before the assistant was sacked last week.

Ohio State football coach Urban Meyer has been placed on administrative leave while the school conducts an investigation into claims that he did not take action on prior abuse allegations against one of his assistants.

"I asked people back at the office to call and see what happened, and they came back and said they know nothing about it", Meyer said at Big Ten Media Days.

When filled in on the details, Whittingham could only say "I hadn't heard that".

Football practice starts on Friday, with offensive coordinator Ryan Day serving as the interim coach.

College football writer Brett McMurphy reported on Wednesday that Meyer's wife, Shelley, knew that Smith had abused his wife, Courtney, providing text messages as proof. Zach Smith has denied the allegations.

Zach Smith was charged in May with misdemeanor criminal trespass.

In 2009, Zach Smith was accused of aggravated battery on his then-pregnant wife while he was working for Meyer in Gainesville, Florida.

"Shelley said she was going to have to tell Urban", Courtney Smith said in an interview with Stadium.

Just days ago, the Ohio-based restaurant chain announced an endorsement deal with Meyer and proclaimed him its "head breakfast coach". Texas assistants Tim Beck and Stan Drayton were at Ohio State through 2016 and 2014 respectively. "I'll have to fill you in on that later if I can".

Of course, there could be more factors in play than just whether Stoops wants to coach again, including whether athletics director Gene Smith gets caught up in the controversy. Smith obtained a restraining order shortly after the incident but charges were never filed. The Smiths separated in June 2015 and divorced in 2016. He said he didn't know of any incident in 2015 but that the Ohio State staff did its own investigation and found no basis for the allegation.
