Authorities say foreign and Indonesian tourists are being evacuated from popular vacation islands off the northwest of Lombok following Sunday's powerful natural disaster that killed at least 82 people.

The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) said the death toll was expected to rise as information comes in from areas where thousands of buildings collapsed or were badly damaged, especially in the north, the quake's epicenter.

The magnitude 7.0 quake has killed at least 39 people on the tourist island of Lombok, about 50 miles (80.5 kilometers) from Bali.

Thousands of homes were damaged by a powerful quake Sunday on the Indonesian tourist island of Lombok.

TRT World's Aishe Jamal has this report. A July 29 quake killed 16 people and damaged hundreds of houses, some of which collapsed in Sunday evening's magnitude 7.0 temblor, killing those inside. The agency's head, Dwikorita Karnawati, later told MetroTV that the tsunami warning had ended. However, an initial warning of a tsunami with waves of up to half a meter was later withdrawn.

Singapore Law and Home Affairs Minister K. Shanmugam, who was on the 10th floor of a hotel in Mataram when the quake struck, said that his room shook violently and walls cracked. "Heard screams", he wrote. Power went out for a while. "Lots of cracks, fallen doors", he wrote on Facebook.
