California fire burns its way into history

Increasing winds are expected in Northern California areas where deadly and destructive wildfires are burning.

Wildfires typically create whirls but rarely of the strength of the one recorded July 26, Dykema said.

Dykema said the whirl uprooted trees and tore roofs from home. The forecast included extremely low humidity levels that leave vegetation ready to burn.

Meanwhile to the south, new evacuations were ordered Saturday evening near twin fires burning in Mendocino and Lake counties across wilderness on both sides of Clear Lake.

However, some days-old evacuations were lifted Friday in an area near Redding, where armies of firefighters and fleets of aircraft continue battling an enormous blaze about 100 miles (160 kilometers) south of the OR line.

Two recent examples are the Carr Fire that's destroyed more than 1,000 homes in and near Redding - it's already the sixth-most destructive in state history - and the Ferguson Fire that forced the closure of part of Yosemite National Park in late July, at the height of tourist season.

Two firefighters and four other people, including two children, have also been killed in connection with the fire. "When the winds are strong enough and the fire is hot enough, sometimes, the rising air columns start to rotate".

"The Mendocino Complex fire remains a dynamic and rapidly changing challenge for firefighters, with additional evacuation orders issued on Saturday and thousands of structures remaining threatened by the massive wildfire".

Forecasters say highest threat areas include a fire near the city of Redding and the Mendocino Complex of two fires north of San Francisco.

These numbers are likely to rise further, given the Carr fire is still only 37% contained and the weather conditions will remain conducive to burns, making fighting the fire more hard.

On Wednesday, Aug. 1, Cal Fire announced that the Eel Fire, is "no longer a Cal Fire incident" and had been transitioned to the U.S. Forest Service - Mendocino National Forest.

After years of drought and a summer of record-breaking heat, enormous tracts of forests, chaparral and grasslands have become tinder that allows even a small spark to explode into a devouring blaze, authorities said.

"It's not good firefighting weather", Anderson said.

CBN News' Heather Sells is in California covering the wildfires.

Due to the recent containment on the smaller of the two blazes, resources are being mobilize to tackle to the much larger Ranch Fire, which continues to grow to the north and southeast.

In total, 14 states are now reporting large fires.

"I can remember a couple of years ago when we saw 10 to 12,000 firefighters in the states of California, Oregon and Washington and never the 14,000 we see now", he said. Varney's radio wasn't communicating with headquarters, so his assistant relayed messages - until they lost contact.
