Trump calling the meeting "totally legal" and "done all the time" in politics'. "I did not know about it!" the president tweeted Sunday morning.

President Donald Trump has for the first time acknowledged that a June 9, 2016 meeting at Trump Tower was the latter. Veselnitskaya wanted the meeting so they could talk about lifting Russian adoptions and possibly lifting sanctions if Trump were to win the election, while Trump Jr. expected useful information against Clinton.

His newest tweet is the closest he has come to admitting the meeting's objective was to seek dirt on Clinton from the Russians.

Any legal battle over whether the president can be compelled to testify could go all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court, the lawyer, Jay Sekulow, said on ABC's "This Week".

His comments come after the president dismissed news reports Sunday that he's anxious about legal trouble for his son related to the special counsel's investigation, and renewed his attacks on the media.

Regarding the possibility that Donald Trump, Jr. violated campaign laws, Rubin wrote that Trump, Jr.'s use of the words "I love it" in an email about the "dirt-finding meeting" at Trump Tower is the "most powerful" piece of evidence against him.

Legal experts have often pointed to a possible violation of federal election laws, which ban taking anything of value - which could include information on a political opponent - from a foreign government trying to influence a USA election.

The infamous meeting was thrust back into the spotlight last month after Trump's former personal attorney, Michael Cohen, alleged Trump approved the meeting.

Donald Trump Jr, along with his father, US President Donald Trump, and others in the administration have downplayed the importance of the meeting.

The meeting between Donald Jr and Ms Veselnitskaya is being looked at as part of this probe.

The source told CNN Trump has been told his tweeting "only gives oxygen to the topic". Trump's legal team defended the statement as "short but accurate" in a letter sent to Mueller in January, as quoted in the New York Times.

"I don't represent Don Jr.", Sekulow said, "but I will tell you I have no knowledge at all of Don Jr. being told that he's a target of any investigation, and I have no knowledge of him being interviewed by the special counsel".

"You then misled the country about the goal of the Trump Tower meeting when it became public".

Sen. Rubio drew the ire of conservatives and Trump supporters in July when he said that the Federal Bureau of Investigation did nothing wrong by spying on Trump's campaign advisor, Carter Page. "They can also cause War!"

He called the "Fake" media "very unsafe and sick".

Trump's attacks on the special counsel's investigation have been rebuffed by Republican leaders in Congress who have expressed support for Mueller.

"Too bad a large portion of the Media refuses to report the lies and corruption having to do with the Rigged Witch Hunt - but that is why we call them FAKE NEWS!"
