Andy Roddick gives his thoughts on Mohamed Lahyani - Nick Kyrgios case

Kyrgios triumphs over Herbert after umpire controversy Wait, did Nick Kyrgios really just get a pep talk from an umpire during a U.S. Open match?

But I get what he was trying to do. He behaves the way he behaves and then you decide if you like it or you don't like it. But you don't go and speak like that, in my opinion.

"I know what I was doing wasn't good", Kyrgios said. He was there for too long.

"It's a conversation, and a conversation can change your mindset".

"That's why it won't happen again and everybody knows that".

Kyrgios also said that he does not believe Lahyani deserves a punishment and that chair umpires in Shanghai and Cincinnati did this as well when Kyrgios was acting up.

Herbert was most angered, though, by an initial statement from the United States Tennis Association, which runs the tournament, apparently justifying Lahyani's actions.

"Nick from his side is not to blame as he did not ask for anything. Finally I do", said Zverev, who will face Philipp Kohlschreiber. "But I'll check out the video and I'll see more".

The match completely turned around after that as the 23-year-old went on to bounce back in the second set and also win the following two sets to reach the third round.

Kyrgios was a set and 0-3 down to Frenchman Pierre-Hugues Herbert on Court 17 when umpire Mohamed Lahyani lost patience with the under-performing 30th seed. "It didn't help me at all".

"I want to help you, I want to help you", Lahyani was overheard telling Kyrgios.

Chris Widmaier, a USTA spokesman, told the Associated Press on Friday: "He now has a better understanding of what our protocols are and was informed that he needs to stick to those protocols for the rest of the tournament".

But it looks like Mohamed Lahyani didn't read the rulebook and Nick Kyrgios was at the receiving end of his favour.

"He came out of the chair because of the noise level in the stadium during the changeover to make sure he could communicate effectively with Kyrgios".

"Lahyani told Kyrgios that, if he was feeling ill, the tournament could provide medical help".

The famous hothead said Kyrgios's effort in the opening set-and-a-half was "pathetic" and called it a "black eye" for the sport, saying although he likes the Aussie star, he was happy the umpire stepped in.

"I understand why people, maybe Herbert, is upset because that has happened".

The physio gave Kyrgios some salt packets and left. "Ironic coming from someone who gets on court coaching every week of the year and also out of the US Open".

"I think the fact that Nick Kyrgios was out there playing and not competing, and wasn't playing hard, Mohamed Lahyani got down off his chair, which I've never seen and actually tried to push him". You're not being professional'. "He did it for the right reasons".

In other Matches - the news wasn't so good for Matt Ebden - going down to German Philipp Kohlschreiber.

Djokovic, the sixth seed, struggled badly during his first round clash with Hungarian Marton Fucsovics, dropping a set before rallying to win in four after spending time in an ice bath during the mandatory 10-minute heat break.
