Typhoon Jebi made landfall in Japan on Tuesday, and is the strongest storm to batter the country in 25 years.

The typhoon, the 21st of the season, is striking the area of the country that is home to Osaka, Kyoto and Kobe.

The storm left more than one million households without power and evacuation advisories were issued at one point for almost 1.2 million people, with another 16,000 under stronger - though still not mandatory - evacuation orders. Prime Minister Shinzo Abe cancelled a scheduled trip to Kyushu, Japan's southernmost main island, to oversee the government's response to the typhoon, Kyodo News service said.

It's possible it may end up close to the parts of Japan where more than 200 people were killed in heavy rains and flooding in July. Jebi is predicted to bring heavy rains tomorrow.

Packing winds of up to 216km/h, Jebi is now hovering near Anan city in Tokushima Prefecture. A 67-year-old man in the town of Itano hit his back after falling over while trying cover the roof of his house with a sheet.

Another man in his 60s fell two metres into a rice paddy field in Mima city, the report said.

More than 750 flights have already been cancelled and runways at Osaka's Kansai International Airport flooded, according to NHK.

In a notice on its website, SIA said that flight SQ622 which was due to depart Changi Airport at 1.55pm on Tuesday (Sept 4) was cancelled. (JR East) decided on the morning of September 4 to reduce Nozomi and Hikari bullet train services on the Tokaido Shinkansen Line to around two trains each per hour.

Some companies recommended their employees to work from home on Tuesday.

NHK also showed footage of a 100-metre (328-feet) tall ferris wheel in Osaka spinning furiously in the strong wind despite being switched off.

JR West also suspended runs on all local lines in the area around Kyoto, Kobe and Osaka before noon.

High waves triggered by typhoon Jebi batter Japan's west coast. A spokeswoman for the airport said it doesn't know when it can resume operations.

While around 500 mm of rainfall is likely to pound central Japan, another 400mm of downpour might fall in the western part of the country.

The JMA said strong winds of up to 216 kph could be expected as Jebi hits the Shikoku and Kinki regions, and gusts of up to 162 kph could affect wide swathes of Japan, spanning the Tohoku, Tokai and Hokuriku regions.
