Australia's John Millman has caused a major boilover by beating five-time champion Roger Federer in the US Open fourth round at Arthur Ashe Stadium.

7-6 (7/3) victory in his first Grand Slam fourth round match scuppered a blockbuster quarter-final between Federer and two-time victor Novak Djokovic.

Before this year's US Open, Millman had only ever progressed past the first round of a Grand Slam tournament on a handful of occasions, with his previous best efforts coming in third round exits at the 2016 Australian Open and 2016 Wimbledon.

The No. 20 seed had to work much harder than she had so far in the tournament, where she had won 22 consecutive games leading into the match Monday.

"I felt like a bit of a deer in headlights to begin with, to be honest with you". When Djokovic stole a break midway through the set to get ahead 3-2, he ran away with the lead and finished with a final break to seal the match.

The victor will face Novak Djokovic or Joao Sousa on Wednesday for a spot in Friday's semifinals.

Millman, ranked 55th in the world, was dominated by Federer in the first set but turned the tables on the Swiss to take the second then held his nerve through two tiebreaks to secure the win in three hours and 34 minutes.

" I'm not 21 any more".

Cilic, who beat Nishikori four years ago for his only major title, was a 7-6 (6), 6-2, 6-4 victor against No. 10 David Goffin, while Nishikori advanced by defeating Philipp Kohlschreiber 6-3, 6-2, 7-5.

That remains Nishikori's best Grand Slam showing.

"You have a team to get you ready, but sometimes you just have to survive".

The last Japanese woman to reach the final eight in a Grand Slam had been Shinobu Asagoe at the 2004 U.S. Open.

He will next face No. 7 seed Marin Cilic who ousted No. 10 seed David Goffin 7-6 (6), 6-2, 6-4.

The final set saw them exchange one break each as it again went to a tiebreaker, but this time the Aussie reeled off four straight points as Federer double-faulted twice in succession to earn five match points, claiming a stunning upset victory at the third attempt.
