An African-American Boston city councilwoman ousted a 10-term congressman on Tuesday in a historic upset in the Democratic primary for a MA congressional seat.

Ms. Pressley, the first black woman elected to the Boston City Council, challenged Mr. Capuano from the left and on style and identity, in a pattern similar to the upset victory of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez earlier this summer in NY.

"Ayanna Pressley is going to be a good Congresswoman and MA is going to be well served", Capuano said in his concession speech.

Democratic candidate for US House of Representatives Ayanna Pressley takes the stage after winning the Democratic primary in Boston, Massachusetts September 4, 2018.

Garrison served one term as a state representative in 1992, but she has lost countless elections since leaving that office. She also worked as a senior aide to former Rep. Ted Kennedy (D-Mass.), was an organizer for Sen.

Pressley enjoyed an endorsement from Ocasio-Cortez on Twitter.

Daniel Mulcare, political science chair at Salem State University, said Pressley's position - alongside Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez in NY - as the face of the energized and emerging progressive wing of the party could also help her.

During the race, Capuano raised $1.73m to Pressley's $890,000, actively campaigning against her and even cancelling his vacation as soon as he heard she was running.

And black politicians in three states - Florida, Georgia and Maryland - have won the Democratic nomination for governor, a historic turn for a country that has elected just two black governors in US history. He had an A rating from the NAACP and hosted campaign events with civil rights icon Rep.

State lawmakers designated the district as the first majority-minority district in MA.

Hillary Clinton carried the district by 72 points in 2016.

Pressley also represents the latest underdog candidate to have emerged to challenge both establishment Democrats and Republicans.

Pressley joins a growing slate of minority women Democrats running in the November 6 midterm elections, including New York's Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who scored a similar upset over a long-time incumbent, and Minnesota state Representative Ilhan Omar, set to become the first Muslim woman elected to Congress. Though results were coming in slowly and the race had yet to be called, Capuano conceded just 80 minutes after polls closed.

The win means Lynch, first elected in 2001, is virtually ensured another two-year term in the 8th Congressional District. She argued that she was more attuned to the needs of the state's only congressional district where a majority of residents are not white.

Another Democrat, U.S. Rep. Niki Tsongas, is retiring at the end of this term, and that open seat touched off a political scramble with 10 candidates on the Democratic primary ballot. This is while only 4.4 percent of precincts are reporting to the Associated Press.
