Burt Reynolds died Thursday morning of a heart attack at a hospital in Florida, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

A MI native transplanted to Florida, he was an American football player in his youth, but switched to acting after a knee injury was aggravated by a vehicle accident.

"If I had to put only one of my movies in a time capsule, it would be 'Deliverance, '" Reynolds also wrote about the 1972 hillbilly thriller. Blake Edwards cast him in the lead of the American remake of The Man Who Loved Women in 1983. He was cast as "Quint Asper" in the popular Gunsmoke series as well as earlier roles in other shows, including Alfred Hitchcock Presents and Perry Mason. He often played a lovable rascal who outwits local authorities as in director Hal Needham's 1977 crowd-pleasing action comedy Smokey and the Bandit, co-starring his girlfriend Field and Jackie Gleason, and its two sequels.

Nearly 20 years (and 60 roles) later, he published a memoir called But Enough About Me - a jokey title for a bestseller that proved beyond a doubt, that audiences still weren't exhausted of hearing about Burt Reynolds. Modern audiences may best remember him, however, for his Oscar-nominated role in the 1997 film "Boogie Nights".

Burton Leon Reynolds Jnr was born on February 11, 1936, and grew up in Florida. He also won a Golden Globe that year. He was 82 years old.

Soon after tributes for the movie icon - who starred in such films as Smokey And The Bandit and Boogie Nights - flooded in.

In April 1972, the actor posed nude on a bearskin rug for Cosmopolitan and nearly a decade later even ended up on the cover of Playboy.

He is also known to have owned several custom-made sports cars, 150 horses, and an impressive toupee collection valued at $100,000. But it's his big screen career that took off in the early 1970s that made Burt Reynolds a star. The couple adopted a son, Quinton Anderson Reynolds.

He would later call Field "the one that got away". In 1988, he married actress Loni Anderson, but that also ended bitterly in 1993.
