"British Airways is investigating, as a matter of urgency, the theft of customer data from its website, ba.com and the airline's mobile app".

"From 22:58 BST August 21 2018 until 21:45 BST September 5 2018 inclusive, the personal and financial details of customers making or changing bookings on our website [ba.com] and [mobile] app were compromised", the company stated.

The company began notifying affected users directly and advising them to keep an eye on their bank accounts and to contact their banks or credit card providers and follow their recommended advice. The airline says it's working with authorities to investigate the data exposure.

He said it's the worst breach since British Airways launched its website 20 years ago.

IAG, which owns British Airways and Spanish carrier Iberia, said last month that first-half profits more than doubled.

BA, however, was quick to issue a video of Cruz apologizing to customers for the inconvenience and reassuring them that the firm was working "tirelessly" to resolve the issue as soon as possible.

Meanwhile, BA's statement revealed that "the information compiled in the hack included names, street addresses, email addresses, credit card numbers and expiration dates, and credit card security codes".

We also asked if a third-party was involved with British Airways investigation, a spokesperson would only say, "a third-party noticed some unusual activity and informed us about it".

"We extremely sorry for what has happened", Cruz told BBC.

"We take the protection of your personal information very seriously".

BA said that all customers affected by the breach have been contacted and the breach only affects the people who bought tickets during that time frame.

Meanwhile, Tim Mackey, Technical Evangelist at Synopsys, said GDPR has placed us in a world where disclosure of data breaches are likely to occur before the full details of the attack are known.

They branded the company "incredibly unprofessional" after investigators took more than two weeks to uncover the fraud. "I'd rather fly easyJet - at least they don't pretend to be anything more than a budget airline and the cabin crew smile!"

In May 2017, the airline was hit by a "major IT systems failure" that brought its operations to a grinding halt in the United Kingdom and stranded tens of thousands of passengers over the course of several days. Passport information, the company thankfully confirms, was not included.
