Karl Stefanovic has defended the artist behind a controversial cartoon of Serena Williams - saying people who don't like it shouldn't look at it.

The cartoon depicts an enraged Williams with dramatically oversized red lips, a hulking physique and hair sticking straight up, in what critics from J.K. Rowling to the National Association of Black Journalists say mirrors racist portrayals of black women during the early 1900s.

Alexis Ohanian Sr, 35, claimed the cartoon, drawn by Herald Sun cartoonist Mark Knight, was both "racist" and "misogynistic" in a Twitter post on Thursday. "Ramos, effectively, had no choice but to dock her a point", Navratilova said. "But I'm a cartoonist and I comment on all topics".

In addition to her extraordinary tennis skills as displayed in her dominant performance against Williams in her first Grand Slam win, the Japanese-born athlete with a Haitian father is now also being recognized for her broad global endorsement appeal. "I'd rather lose", she said. "I simply saw the world number one player having a dummy spit". Viewers could not have guessed that she won by looking at her crestfallen, teary-eyed expression throughout the immediate aftermath of the match.

Speaking to ABC, Knight refused to apologise, saying, "I'm upset that people are offended, but I'm not going to take the cartoon down".

You can see the cartoon below.

Oh, and then there's the fact that they slaughtered the country's Indigenous population, tried to breed them out by stealing their children, and that whole chestnut.

But Knight, as well as Johnston, have repeatedly defended the drawing.

It appears they missed a few tweets - including one from their country's own beloved basketball player, Ben Simmons, disapproving of the drawing.

'She's (Williams) great to draw - she's a powerful figure (and) she's strongly built'. "It had nothing to do with gender or race".

Mark Knight also made excuses.

The subhead read, "If the self-appointed censors of Mark Knight get their way on his Serena Williams cartoon, our new politically correct life will be very tiresome indeed". Poor behaviour in any sport needs to be called out, ' Mr Miller wrote on Twitter.

Another Twitter user, Paul Pellen, added: "Outrage for the sake of outrage!"

'She's powerfully built. She wears these outrageous costumes when she plays tennis. I find it interesting that she did it only when she was losing'.

"When I drew that cartoon, I wasn't thinking of racial politics in America". "She was insisting that she doesn't cheat - completely believable, but besides the point - while he was making a call over which he, at that point, had little discretion".
