As of 1 p.m. ET, the storm's sustained winds dropped to 75 miles per hour as it wobbled west-southwestward near the coast, delaying its expected move inland, the National Hurricane Center said.

And cameras aboard the International Space Station managed to catch incredible footage just a few minutes after the storm's landfall.

Tropical Storm Florence made landfall Friday morning as a Category 1 hurricane and has continued to weaken as it slowly moves inland.

It all seems pretty bad, I mean, actually, real bad.

About 70 people were pulled from a motel near Camp LeJeune at the height of the storm as the roof started to collapse.

Hurricane Florence has begun battering it's way through the North Carolina coastline with heavy rain and high winds in what people fear could lead to the deaths of "a lot of people".

She estimated 441,000 people have already evacuated because of the storm.

"It's important to note that the two individuals in the background are walking on concrete, and Mike Seidel is trying to maintain his footing on wet grass, after reporting on-air until 1am this morning and is undoubtedly exhausted", the network said.

More than 770,000 customers are without power in North Carolina. As Cooper said, "There's nowhere for the water to go".

"Cash donations go further and make a greater impact and easier to get to the harder hit areas", said Charvalla West, community resource center manager for the United Way of Williamsburg.

It's unclear exactly how many people evacuated, but more than 1.7 million people in the Carolinas and Virginia were warned to clear out.

"It doesn't matter how much money you have or how many generators you have if you can't get gas", she said.

The storm known as Florence is creating a slow-motion natural disaster for the Carolinas that could prove deceptively lethal as swollen rivers and streams spill over their banks and continue to rise.

The storm's movement, not its strength, has forecasters and officials anxious.

The powerful storm inundated coastal streets with ocean water and left tens of thousands without power.

Members of the Louisiana Cajun Navy were assisting with rescue operations but later moved to Wilmington after emergency responders said conditions were under control.

In New Bern, population 29,000, flooding on the Neuse River trapped people, and Mayor Dana Outlaw told The Charlotte Observer that about 200 had been rescued by 5 a.m. Residents reached out for help through the night by phone and social media.

Monetary donations also are are accepted at many locations.

In Kinston, a city southeast of Raleigh, two people died in the storm.

At least four people have died, but authorities fear the death toll with increase as the storm crawls westward Saturday across SC.

"On a scale of 1 to 10, I'm probably a 7" in terms of worry, she said.

The storm surge that has hit New Bern is "approximately 2 feet higher" now than it was during Hurricane Irene seven years ago, the National Weather Service office in Morehead City says. "Plant procedures call for the reactors to be shut down before the anticipated onset of hurricane-force winds", agency spokesman Joey Ledford told CNN. US President Donald Trump on Tuesday signed declarations of emergency for North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia, freeing up federal resources for storm response. The wind in Wilmington gusted to 105 miles per hour, the strongest since Hurricane Helene on September 27, 1958, the Weather Service said.

The National Hurricane Center described Florences path as a wobble around southeastern North Carolina.

Forecasters said that given the storms size and sluggish track, it could cause epic damage akin to what the Houston area saw during Hurricane Harvey just over a year ago, with floodwaters swamping homes and businesses and washing over industrial waste sites and hog-manure ponds.

"These are folks who chose to stay and ride out the storm for whatever reason, despite having a mandatory evacuation", she said.
