Russian Federation accused of changing United Nations report on North Korea sanctions

US officials know North Korea won’t give up nukes — but Trump keeps getting tricked by Kim’s nice letters: report North and South Korea set up liaison office to 'talk 24/7'

The two Koreas will be holding a closed working-level meeting on Friday to discuss the logistics of next week's summit, an official at the South's presidential office said.

A day earlier, Haley said Russian Federation pressured the independent sanctions monitors to amend a report that was eventually submitted to the Security Council's North Korea sanctions committee last month.

The staff "in the liaison office will be there as a family, whether they are from North or South", the spokesperson said, adding, "I look forward to seeing this harmony will be expanded from Kaesong to overall Korea Peninsula".

During the previous meetings with Moon and a separate historic summit with U.S. President Donald Trump, Kim has expressed his vague commitment to complete denuclearization of the peninsula.

During the talks, the two sides discussed the idea of setting up a West Sea zone around the Northern Limit Line (NLL), a tense de facto maritime border, where the entry of warships and live-fire exercises would be banned, a Seoul official said on condition of anonymity.

This undated photo released on Sept, 12, 2018, from South Korea Unification Ministry via Newsis, shows a liaison office building between South and North Korea in Kaesong, North Korea.

The Korean War ended with an armistice, not a peace treaty, leaving USA -led United Nations forces including South Korea technically still at war with the North. Picture taken on April 18, 2018.

This is a follow-up on the agreement that the leaders of South and North Korea arrived at in their April summit to run such an office on hopes that it will serve as a communication channel to help facilitate inter-Korean cooperation on various fronts.

US officials know North Korea won’t give up nukes — but Trump keeps getting tricked by Kim’s nice letters: report

"The United States would want to have a solid roadmap, but the North has been avoiding it and instead unilaterally taking what it calls denuclearisation measures that fall far short of USA expectations", said Cho Tae-yong, a former South Korean deputy presidential national security advisor and nuclear negotiator. During the war, it was used for truce negotiations, so escaped the bombing which leveled most of North Korea.

So far, there has been no concrete progress made on the American effort to get North Korea to give up its nuclear weapons.

US officials say they have already made their own conciliatory gestures, including halting joint military exercises with South Korea.

"How will President Trump feel if South Korea is responsible for undermining his campaign?"

Trump thanked Kim on Twitter, saying, "This is a big and very positive statement from North Korea".

The resumption of the Kaesong park and other dormant inter-Korean cooperation projects aren't likely to happen anytime soon because US-led global sanctions on North Korea remain in place.

Chung conveyed similarly promising comments from Kim after a previous visit in March, when South Korean officials shuttled between Pyongyang and Washington to set up the Trump-Kim meeting.
