A 29-year-old New Jersey man who visited a Texas surf resort in September died after contracting what is commonly known as a "brain-eating amoeba".

The GoFundMe page announcing the death of Fabrizio Stabile, 29, of Ventnor, N.J., one town over from Atlantic City, indicated that Stabile suddenly came down with a severe headache while mowing his lawn on September 16 and died on September 21.

Tests of his body showed the presence of Naegleria Fowleri, a brain-eating amoeba contracted by ingesting warm freshwater in bodies of water such as lakes, rivers, and hot springs. Stabile had previously been surfing in the pool - but it is unknown at this time whether he contracted Naegleria Fowleri from the water in the Waco facility.

BSR Cable Park owner Stuart E. Parsons Jr. told The Associated Press that the park is closed and is cooperating with the investigation into Stabile's death.

Symptoms start between one and nine days after swimming or other nasal exposure to Naegleria-containing water.

"The worst-case scenario was unfolding in front of our eyes as we learned that this infection results in a 98% fatality rate".

Craine said one person from out of state who visited the park has been infected by the amoeba, and the CDC is trying to find the source. Once it reaches the brain it causes primary amebic meningoencephalitis (PAM), which is often fatal.

The park voluntarily closed on Friday and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention was testing the attraction's pool water for Naegleria fowleri, the newspaper reported. In his memory, his family is asking for donations to the Swim Above Water Amoeba Awareness Foundation which aims to bring awareness to the disease.

He died five days later and tested positive for Naegleria fowleri the day before his death, his family said.

Only four people of the 143 infected with the amoeba in the United States between 1962 and 2017 have survived.

N. fowleri infections are extremely rare: From 1962 to 2017, 143 cases were reported in the US, according to the CDC.

A person can be contaminated with the amoeba while swimming or diving.
